The Fishing Line Jan. 23

Captain Tom

By by Mark Robbins

Well, the fishing was a little lighter this week but that’s to be expected when not many fishable days materialize. The days that were available were cold. I can attest to that. Some nice fish were caught, but more would be better. Either the fish didn’t get that memo or they developed lock-jaw. We’ll report on the catches that were made and share word of an evening out that will benefit a local angler who could use our help. Let’s cast off and get going.
The Fishin’ Fever had a good day on the cold Saturday of our recent snowy weekend. They landed seventeen keepers of which four were over ten pounds, the largest being 15 pounds, and belonging to Dennis Muhlenforth who was also the high hook of the day. Rob Rommel had a very good day as he caught two fish over 10 pounds. The final coveted double-digit blackfish went to Captain Tom who brought in a 13 pounder. These fish were weighed, photographed, and then released to fight another day. That’s a great gesture guys. These fish have good genes and allowing them to breed again is good for future of this fishery.
The Porgy IV was also out prior to the snowy Sunday. On Saturday they had a good crowd aboard “but they didn’t find many bites.” Even in the cold conditions they were able to land 11 keepers which isn’t too shabby considering. They will continue to run trips as the weather allows. Let’s hope the weather cooperates.
The Cape May Lady was out on Saturday and ran an exploratory trip. They were checking on some different areas for fishing. The action was slow, just as everyone else who was fishing was experiencing, with some shorts and a couple keepers caught. A stray seabass was caught, and then released, as it was out of season.
The Starfish was able to get out on Saturday with the rest of the fleet. They had a similar day as the action was slow, but they still had some fish to show for their time on the water. The fish were solid, quality fish.
Libation Charters recently headed south for some fishing in North Carolina. They’ll set up their winter base there, and I’ll let you know how they’re doing. Good luck guys.
Another local boat that has gone south for the winter is Jeannie D. Sportfishing. I suspect we will be hearing how they are doing very soon. They are based in Manteo, North Carolina at Pirates Cove Marina. If you’re down that way and looking for a familiar name to fish with then get in touch with them to set something up.
Captain Skip from Stalker Fishing Charters has updated the “schedules pages” on his website for the Stalker II and his backwater skiff. He fishes for a large variety of species from early spring to late fall and as the fishing seasons dictate. Give him a call at 609-972-5218 to grab the trip, and time, that you want. His schedule is booking up fast, so don’t wait.
The Miss Avalon Fleet, with captains Irv and Brandon, is also filling out the schedule for their two boats. They have the 45-foot Avalon Lady pontoon boat and the 78-foot Miss Avalon and offer fishing, crabbing, sunset and nature trips and private party cruises. Reach them at 609-967-7455.
You should use that advice for any boat you are thinking of fishing on, cruising with, or for any style of trip. Now is the time to give them a call.
I want to let everyone know of a function that is coming up. On Saturday, March 16, there will be a Beef and Beer fundraiser for someone a lot of us know and have talked fishing with, Rusty Zeigler. He has been battling health issues over the past few years, and now has a major operation in front of him. You may have interacted with Rusty if you have ever been to Hinch Marina or Off The Hook Bait and Tackle. He was very willing to help me when I started writing this column as he provided me with plenty of information about what was happening in our fishing community, which I then passed on. The event will run from 6pm till 9pm at the Bellevue Tavern in Cape May Court House. Prize donations would be helpful. There will be door prizes and a 50/50. If you have any questions please call 609-884-7289 or to arrange to purchase tickets or donate prizes please call 609-884-0444. Tickets are $25.00 in advance or $30.00 at the door.
