The Fishing Line: In-between times

By Carolyn Miller

These two weeks between Mother’s Day and Memorial Day weekend are always busy ones so get that boat ready and get back in the water soon. The marinas and party and charter boats are waiting for you.
Bill (bucktail willie) Shillingford fishing out of Whale Creek Marina had a difficult week with the strong winds but when the wind broke, he found fish.
He found stripers a little bigger (up to 30 inches) on bucktails and lots of small fluke along with bluefish
Captain Ray was forced to stay in a few days, too, due to the winds but the days he fished he was able get a few fish on both clouser flies and swimming plugs.
Ray found small stripers and a few bluefish to 22 inches around the inlet rocks. There were no visible signs that the fish were there, but be patient and keep at it you could come up with a few.
Still waiting for the action to heat up. So far not seeing any bait fish or bird activity yet.
In reply to a question I got: Tog season is closed until July 16, then one tog a day until Nov. 15 and then 6 a day Nov. 16 to Dec 31.

The future health of Barnegat Bay, an ecological gem of New Jersey, will be the focus of a series of public stakeholder meetings planned for May 24 and June 14. The May 24 session will focus on developing a comprehensive list of actions previously taken to protect or improve the bay. The June 14 meeting will develop a priority list of research and implementation strategies to serve as a basis for future bay protection and improvement measures.

In a vote supported by all member states of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) Summer Flounder, Scup and Black Sea Bass Management Board, states will now have the option to liberalize the 2010 black sea bass season in state waters by an additional 90 days. The proposed new season will run from May 22 through Oct. 11, with an additional open period of Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. The proposal would keep the size and bag limit the same of 12-1/2 inches and 25 fish per angler. (Source: RFA)
New Jersey has a number of wildlife rehabilitators who can answer questions and if necessary, properly care for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. These volunteers are licensed by the NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife and donate their time. They treat and care for wild animals until they can be released back into the wild.
