The Fishing Line: Hide & Seek

By Carolyn Miller

May’s weather got us off to a slow start but with flounder, drum, blues, crabs, and sea bass (starts May 19) on the horizon, get ready to go out the minute the weather clears.
Sterling Harbor has been getting reports of flounder in the back bays with numerous fish 17.5 inches plus. It looks like it’s going to be a great season. Small stripers are being caught in the Delaware Bay in the 60 foot Slough area, and it seems the larger fish have moved up the Bay near the Salem Nuclear Plant for their spring spawn.
Reports of drumfish are starting to trickle in from the Delaware Bay. Remember, tog fishing is closed until July 27. Crabby Jack gives the crabbing 2.5 claws and says there are plenty of crabs around but mostly small ones right now. The Marina is now open and ready to meet your needs.
Stray Cat Charters managed to limit out on the last day for tog fishing. Mark Sydow from Mays Landing bagged a 10.9-pound tog to win the pool and Bill Gaddis, Slickerville, just missed it with a 10.8-pounder. Captain saw some sea bass in the area already. Stray Cat starts the run for tuna soon, call 391-9630.
Captain Ray took advantage of one of the windy days with some light rain and went over to local trout stocked pond. In two hours he caught 7 keeper size trout 12 to 16 inches on the fly rod. Ray kept 2 for dinner and released the other 5. He got no hits on traditional fly but caught all the trout on a blue/silver baby bunker pattern. Captain figures that as long as it looks like a bait fish they will eat it. When the sun came out, the bite shut off so he switched to a small fly and caught 8 sunfish in the next hour and a half.
