The Fishing Line: Fishing December Style

By Carolyn Miller

Winds and murky waters are keeping reports at a minimum but the pictures show that there are some beautiful fish waiting to be caught. Reminder as the tog come in: limit is 6 fish at 15 inches until Dec. 31.
The Fight Leukemia Fishing Tournament thanks all who supported the fight against blood cancers. Over $4,000 was raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Despite windy conditions the tournament produced winners in the striped bass category but no winners for the blue fish or weak fish categories. Grand Prize winner: John “Spanky” Concannon with a 8.5 pound striped bass. Second place: Randy Young, 7.84 pounder. Both were caught out of Great Egg Harbor inlet.
Brendan Bridgeman, Stone Harbor, took first place in the Fourth Annual Scott Bevan Striped Bass Bonanza, which took place Nov. 17 at Smuggler’s Cove, Stone Harbor. The winning striper weighed 39 pounds, 46 inches. Best fish caught by a female angler weighed in at 13 pounds 5 ounces, 35 inches, by Deneen Bevan of Stone Harbor, wife of the late Scott Bevan. Scott who passed away in July 2010 from metastatic melanoma at age 43. He was a passionate fisherman and a carpenter in Stone Harbor. Friends and family gather annually to celebrate his life.
Jeff Kampf and dad Bill, caught these healthy stripers about a mile and a half southwest of the canal in Delaware Bay on chuncked bunker. They lost 2 more keepers right at the boat and landed a 20 inch fish as well. Jeff says they had a great day with lots of action on incoming tide despite murky water.
For Captain Ray, it was another frustrating week if you wanted to catch stripers on a fly. Water still has not cleaned up and heavy winds forced him to stay at the dock. He reports some action from guys using bunker and fishing up in Delaware Bay.
