And so the cycle continues. A trip cancelled, one made while the weather window allowed, and another hoping to be rescheduled when the conditions allow (since the wind didn’t cooperate). Oh well, such is life for those who fish in the winter. Anyway, news is trickling in of some items of interest, including a couple more shows for you to check out. Well, let’s get going.
On Friday, the Cape May Lady “took a ride farther south” than any previous trip. They were exploring and hoping to “find new spots to fish.” Fishing was described as “slow,” but was livened up when two fish “around the 10-pound mark” came over the rail. Other smaller keeper-sized fish were caught while a number of throwbacks also showed up. The crew was encouraged by the signs of life that they saw.
This is a good time to remind everyone of some upcoming fishing related shows. It is a good way to relieve some of the cabin fever that is affecting us all.
The Saltwater Sportsman National Seminar Series is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Linwood Country Club. This show features a number of speakers who are local captains, and those involved in the fishing industry who share their fishing knowledge on their areas of expertise. These areas are of a geographic interest. Locally, flounder, striped bass, blackfish, tuna and sharks are examined. Also, general in-shore and off-shore tactics for those species and others are featured. The show concludes with an after-party at the Bass Pro Shop in Atlantic City.
Next up, by scheduled date, is the Ocean City Intermediate School Fishing Show. The date of the show is Saturday, March 3. Up to 90 tables of new and used saltwater and freshwater gear will be available. A small fee for entry goes to the school’s fishing club and is used to support activities for the seventh and eighth graders that make up the club. The school’s address is 1901 Bay Ave., Ocean City.
The Wildwood Fishing and Boating Expo is scheduled for Saturday, April 7 and Sunday, April 8. It will take place at the Wildwoods Convention Center. Boats, kayaks, the latest in electronics, custom rods and tackle are just starters. Sea Tow, Tow Boat U.S., sunglasses and seminars on fishing topics will also be offered. On-site parking for a fee is available at the Convention Center, or free parking is available on the street. For more information or to request a vendor packet, check out the website at www.fishingexpowildwood.com.
Late news arrived of two more shows. One is the Atlantic City Boat Show. It runs from Feb. 28 through March 4 at the Atlantic City Convention Center. The other show to come in late is the Saltwater Fishing Expo, running March 16 through March 18 in Edison, N.J. It’s not exactly local, but may be worth the time to take a road trip to.
Per a news release from the state, the DEP recently welcomed Catherine R. McCabe as the Acting Commissioner. She comes to the DEP with a distinguished career in government service, both in environmental law and science. Part of her duties will be to pursue clean energy and place the state at the national forefront of environmental protection.
Make plans to go check out a show or two, and maybe even more. Maybe do some fishing if the circumstances allow, or get your gear prepped for the spring. You can also renew your Saltwater Registry now so it’s done and out of the way. Or, you can just relax and unwind. No matter what, take care and I’ll see you around.
