The Fishing Line

By On Deck Staff

Fishing reports are slowing down but don’t give up on the fish. December has tricked us before and lured us into thinking the fish had all gone south for the winter. Not true.
Captain Ray on the Tide Runner reports that even with the cold weather and wind, the fishing was good for catching stripers on flies and plugs. With the high winds the water around the inlet and ocean was a bit brown from all the wave action, but the back-bay area had decent clarity and the best bass action.
Water temperatures are still in the 45 to 47 degree range. Point breaks with back eddies, creek mouths and sod banks with deep drop off, produced fish. Yo Zuri Mag Darters worked slow produced for plug anglers and for the fly fishermen the same chartreuse buck tail deceivers worked slow with intermediate or sinking line, caught well.
Captain Ray says it’s hard to believe the season is over, but the winter provides an opportunity to get ready for next year and tie up a good supply of fresh flies. He wishes everyone a great holiday. The same to you, Ray, and be well.
If you are thinking about strengthening your fishing knowledge and skills in the upcoming off-season, Cape May County Technical Schools Evening Division is offering three courses of interest: A Saltwater Fishing Series with Captain Dick herb and Bob Jackson; Fishing Rod Making and Repair also with Captain Dick Herb; and Waterman (and women) Skills with Hans Toft.
