The Fishing Line: Are you ready?

By Carolyn Miller

Sea bass, stripers, tile and tautog, they’re all being caught locally. It’s time to get moving, for sure.
Captain Ray Szulczewski got the Tide Runner in the water for the season after a couple of days of gale force winds but hasn’t actually been fishing yet.
When he put the boat in, the water temperature was around 51 degrees in the inter harbor, so Captain Ray says that if the weather co-operates and we get some sunny days, the back bays behind Wildwood and Cape May should start to show some fish activity soon.
Some of the captains running bigger boats have been doing very well up in Delaware Bay, using clams. They have been getting large numbers of stripers with many anglers limiting out with keepers.
Offshore fishing reports from the Atlantic Star, continue to bring very good news. Lester Vanderhoff, EHT; Mike Smithward, Clifton; Peter Lee, NY; and Denny Ko, NY; all caught the limit of sea bass with fish up to 7-pounds. All but a few anglers had their limit of sea bass and most averaged a couple of tile fish, too.
Sammy Sinn, Brooklyn, NY, caught the limit of sea bass on that trip along with three tile fish including the 10-pound pool winner.
On the next trip out most anglers again had their limit or close to it plus two or more tile fish. Phil Nicholas, Pennsburg, Pa.; John Kusmanick, Woodbury; Steve Karlicki, Bayonne; Ken Waters, West Deptford; and Bob Herrington, Westville; were among the successful fishers.
John Lisa, Langhorn, Pa., managed to bring in15 sea bass and two tile fish, including an 8-pound pool winning.
On the last trip reported Bruce Lee, Fort Lee; Romuald Lupinkski, Brooklyn, NY; Adrian Montague, NY; Larry Rossi, Malvern, Pa.; and John Gilbert, Sharon Hill, Pa., had bags full of sea bass and a few tiles each.
Back Bay and Ocean Reef Fishing Lecture, Tuesday, April 21, 7 p.m., multi-purpose room Avalon elementary school, Captain Dick Herb will discuss NJ proposed salt water license, bay fishing for flounder and striper and ocean reef fishing for tautog, sea bass, and more.
