What Kind of Reel to Use
Spin fishing is an ideal fishing method for beginning anglers. Spinning equipment is easier to use than bait casting. You can use it to cast both light and heavy lures without tangling or breaking your fishing line. Basic equipment includes a seven-foot rod, a spinning reel, and an eight- to 12-pound test line for casting 1/4- to 3/4-ounce lures. You can use spinning or bait casting, however spin fishing is much easier for the beginner. Bait casting require more practice.
- Hold the rod at about waist level, grasping it so that the reel is below the rod, and the foot of the reel feels natural between your fingers. The bait or lure should be hanging 10 to 18 inches below the tip of the rod.
- Hook the line with your forefinger and open the bail, continuing to hold the line.
- Pull the rod tip back so the tip sweeps over your dominant shoulder, and then bring it forward swiftly pointing the rod tip at your target. As the rod comes forward of your shoulder release the line with your finger so the weight of the lure pulls line off the reel.
- When the bait or lure hits the water, close the bail with your hand, and you’re ready to reel using a retrieve technique.
What Kind of Bait is Best
Live bait catches fish, but only if you take steps to keep it alive and cast gently so it remains on the hook. With artificial bait, you have complete control. There are advantages and disadvantages when using artificial baits and live baits. Use the bait that is more appropriate to the kind of fishing you are planning to do. Artificial or imitation lures are the names given to plastics, spinners, jigs, poppers, flies and spoons. When used, these are seen by fish as a natural food such as a minnow or mayfly. While bait fishing can be less expensive, lures can be more fun because the lure requires the angler to provide the motion. The good news is that fish like both artificial lures and live baits.
