WILDWOOD – Mary Lee, a 3,456-pound, 16-foot great white shark, was tracked about 10 miles off of Wildwood around 10 a.m. May 7 and then again about 15 miles off of Avalon around 1 p.m.
Mary Lee is being tracked by Ocearch.org, a non-profit organization with a global reach for unprecedented research on great white sharks and other large apex predators. According to Ocearch.org’s website, the group is able to track Mary Lee and other great white sharks through ‘pings’ which are determined when the tagged shark’s dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water and transmits a signal to the satellite overhead. The transmission then sends back an estimated geo-location.
Mary Lee has been tracked up and down the East Coast, being near Maryland and Virginia earlier this week.
Since being tagged Sept. 17, 2012, Mary Lee has traveled a total of 19,486 miles.
You may track Mary Lee and other great whites through Ocearch.org’s website or mobile app.
