Fishing Line

By Carolyn Miller

Marinas, bait shops and charter boat and party boat captains are all gearing up for a good season. Everyone is cautiously optimistic that the economy will not send recreational fishing any deeper in debt.
Fishing in Cape May County is still one of the best deals around.
Captain Jim McClintock, Fins & Grins, Wildwood, reports striper fishing is red-hot. Captain is also going out for tog and drum.
Captain Ray put Tide Runner in this week. He saw a couple of boats that had tog fishing the inlet and a few boats returning to the boat ramp, back from Delaware Bay with some nice catches of stripers.
Definitely time to get that boat in or catch a charter.
During April and May, nearly 600,000 trout will be stocked in 89 streams and 90 ponds and lakes throughout New Jersey. Some of the 26,000 two-pound to five-pound bruisers still out there from stockings in the fall and winter will be joined by another 6,000 big trout during the spring stocking season.
Stocking information is also available by calling 609-633-6765.
Trout fishing has never been better in the Garden State. Visit njfishandwildlife.com to buy and print your fishing license and trout stamp.
License buyers have the satisfaction of knowing 100 percent of their money goes toward improving fishing in New Jersey and protecting the quality of the state’s waters both for fish and people.
“In a rule to be published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, April 7, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is expected to “extend the prohibition on recreational fishing for black sea bass in the EEZ beyond the expiration of the initial closure period.” Set to expire on April 12, the closure will now be in effect through May 21, an extension of the original 180-day closure by 39 days.” (RFA press release)
