COURT HOUSE – A group of local young actors will travel to Broadway on July 24 to see a Tony Award winning musical. Afterward, they will return 160 miles off-Broadway to the Performing Arts Center of Middle Township to present their own big-scale version of another prize-winning Broadway musical.
The youths, between the ages of seven and 18 are members of the six-week summer theatrical camp offered by Shore (Sure) Productions and The PAC at the Performing Arts Center. The camp will culminate with four performances of the lively “Shrek, the Musical,” in August. Before that, however, the students will attend the Broadway production of “Pippin” which won the 2013 Tony for best revival of a musical.
“We want the cast to get the feeling of a major Broadway show, so they might bring some of that energy to the stage here,” said Kay Aspell, director of “Shrek.” “And this will be the first Broadway show that some of our cast will see.”
“Shrek, The Musical,” which played on Broadway from 2008 to 2010 and won 12 Drama Desk Awards and eight Tony nominations, will include a cast of 64 campers in this local version.
“This is an especially challenging and highly entertaining show with good music accompanied by a live orchestra, colorful costumes and creative theatrical make-up for the actors,” commented Aspell who was inspired to direct it after seeing the original production on Broadway.
Billy Graff, in the title role of Shrek the Ogre, will not be easily recognizable as he will appear in the entire play looking like Shrek. Emily Kelley, as Fiona, with her sharp wit and tapping feet will win the hearts of Shrek and the audience. Others in leading roles include Jordan Severino as Pinocchio; Danielle Greene as Donkey, and Lauren Novsak as Gingy.
Performances are Aug. 7, at 7:30 p.m.; Aug. 8, at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m.; and Aug. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. Call the PAC box office at 609-463-1924. There is free parking on the premises.
The PAC is situated at 212 Bayberry Drive, Court House, one-mile east of Exit 10 of the Garden State Parkway.
