CAPE MAY – The Center for Community Arts Youth Art Program is participating in the Global Art Project for Peace. Since it’s beginning in 1993, the Global Art Project for Peace has linked 115,000 participants in 82 countries on seven continents. Nominated for a UNESCO Peace Prize, the Project connects people of diverse cultural backgrounds, providing exposure to new ideas and a feeling of connection to the Whole “The purpose of the Global Art Project is to joyously create a culture of peace through art. The project gives participants in local communities an opportunity to join together to create a cooperative global community. It’s an opportunity for people to join their energy together to seed the future with visions of peace,” explains Project Founder/Director, Katherine Josten. Center for Community Arts YAP Cape May students, along with the community at the recent potluck supper in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., have created a work of art entitled “Time for Peace”. Messages of peace were written on 2-inch squares cut from world maps. These squares cover the face of a clock where the numbers have been exchanged for letters spelling “time for peace.” The artwork is on display at the Cape May City Library at 110 Ocean Street, Cape May. During the week of April 23-30 there will be a worldwide art exchange as participants are linked with another around the world to exchange their artwork. Thousands of messages of peace and goodwill will simultaneously encircling the Earth. Center for Community Arts will display the artwork they receive from the Global Art Project for Peace Exchange at the Delores Cheney Youth Arts Fair held May 3rd.
The YAP program is a free art program for children ages 10-14. YAP Cape May is held on Saturday nights from 5:00- 8 p.m. in Lyle Hall at the Cape May United Methodist Church, enter through the red doors facing ACME parking lot on the corner of Lafayette St. and Ocean. The theme for YAP Cape May is “Exploring the Concept of Peace and Good Wishes Around the World through Art”. The program is taught by local artist/teacher Janet Payne.
YAP Lower Township is held on Friday nights, from 5:00- 8 p.m. at the Richard M. Teitelman School located at 687 Route 9, Cape May, NJ. The theme for YAP Lower Township will be “Cultural Connections”. The program is taught by local artist/teacher Amanda Tozer.
