COURT HOUSE – Among the 61 young actors who will perform in the upcoming big scale musical, “The Little Mermaid” at The Performing Arts Center of Middle Township there will be some who will not always be able to keep their feet on the floor. That’s because the script calls for them to be flying high above the huge stage of the state-of-the-art theater.
A team of stunt flyers from a Las Vegas-based firm specializing in the art of indoor flying will soon arrive at The PAC to train the actors on how to fly. As they soar above the PAC’s stage, they will be manipulated by unseen ropes from the theater’s wings.
“It’s an exciting part of the musical, not only for the audience, but for the actors who fly,” said director Kay Aspell.
Based on a 1999 Disney animated film, the stage version of ”The Little Mermaid” ran on Broadway from Jan. 10, 2008 to Aug. 30, 2009 and has been popular at schools and regional theaters throughout the nation. It is being presented here as the culmination of a six week summer theater camp sponsored by Shore Productions for youngsters between the ages of seven and 18. The camp is a thorough introduction to theater from box office management to scenery building and this year included a trip to Broadway to see the musical, “Newsies.” For some in the cast it was their first Broadway show and for others their first visit to New York City.
“The Little Mermaid” will be presented Aug. 14 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 15 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 general admission and $10 for children. Call 609-463-1924 for reservations.
The flying actors include Skyla La Monica in the title role; Josh Hettenbach, Sophia Lomax, Jordan Severino, EmilyKelley, Camryn Simmerman, Abigail Tunney, Erin Hawk, Coleen Daly, Gianna Ballestriere, Macey Tilsner and Elise Fiore.
