THE WILDWOODS — Get out your leisure suit, Qiana dress and platform shoes. Disco, along with rhythm and blues, is coming to the Wildwoods on Sat., April 25.
The day kicks off with a ’70s Street Fair in Fox Park on Ocean Avenue between Burk and Montgomery Avenues in Wildwood from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. This family festival will feature great food, crafts, merchandise vendors and continuous free live entertainment! Admission to the fair is free.
Sat. night, the Wildwoods Convention Center will be grooving with a ‘70s Dance Party and Concert that features a lineup of talent that will have everyone out of their seats and onto the dance floor. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
“We have an impressive list of performers taking the stage,” said Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano. “Tavares, Evelyn Champagne King, MFSB, The Ritchie Family, Denise Montana and Purple Reign will all be here,” he added.
Tavares, whose career has spanned more than 50 years, rose to fame in 1975 and 1976 with their hits “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel” and “It Only Takes a Minute.”
Evelyn “Champagne” King’s song, “Shame” spent 23 weeks on the Billboard chart in 1978 as both a Disco and Rhythm and Blues song. In 2004 it was one of the first records inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame.
Another Philadelphia-based act, MFSB, recorded The Sound of Philadelphia, or TSOP, in 1972. The music became the theme of the popular television show, “Soul Train.” Released as a single in 1974, the song rose to number one on the Billboard rhythm and blues and pop charts. Some sources refer to TSOP as influencing the establishment of disco music.
Originally from Philadelphia, The Ritchie Family’s number one disco hits include “Brazil,” “The Best Disco in Town,” “African Queens” and “Quiet Village.”
“The talent we’ve lined up is some of the best of the 1970’s,” said Troiano. “It will be a great evening for people who experienced the music of the ‘70s as well as those who appreciate great dance music.”
Reserved seating for the concert is $30 for bleacher and floor, or $40 for VIP seating which includes the first five rows. Tickets are available at City Hall, located at 4400 New Jersey Avenue in Wildwood, or through Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 or www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets will also be available at the Wildwoods Convention Center Box Office the day of the show.
