What’s Happening in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY — The Trail of Two Cities between Ocean City and Somers Point will be a nostalgic jaunt for many this year. The 15th Annual 5K run/walk across the antiquated bridges and causeway will be the last before the old spans are demolished to make way for the new, multi-million dollar sky scrapers that will change the landscape of Rt. 52.
The old fashioned bridges that yawned open to let boats through and cause traffic back-ups will be a thing of the past. But the former causeway, with its proximity to the water and congenial view of the bay, has installed fond memories into the hearts of many visitors and residents alike over the years.
Recognizing this, the Trail of Two Cities Committee has decided to dedicate its 2010 commemorative shirt to the past. A drawing of one of the bridges by Kathy Arleth, which has been on the shirt for years, will again be featured. Under it will be inscribed “Happy Trails To You Old Friend.” That should be enough to illicit a nostalgic sigh from most Trail of Two City veterans.
For the final opportunity to negotiate the old Causeway, join your friends and neighbors on Sat., Nov. 6 for a healthy race or walk. Snap photos of the present draw bridges, gape in awe at the huge, new concrete structures. Breathe the fresh bay air. Say goodbye to an old friend.

Corson’s Inlet Area Clean Up: Volunteers have been doing an outstanding job cleaning our beaches and Back Bay areas. All are invited to join the Ocean City Community Assn. on Sat., Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. till noon to help clean and beautify the Corson’s Inlet area. Meet at the Parking area of Corson’s Inlet State Park, 59th and Bay Ave.

The Quiet Festival, this community’s annual Crusade on behalf of silent stuff, is set for Nov. 10 through 14.
The event, inaugurated 15 years ago, showcases quiet pastimes ranging from paper airplane making and flying and a mime performance to poetry reading, a children’s program and acoustic folk singing concerts. There are events for all age groups and admission is free.
Official opening ceremonies are at noon, Fri., Nov. 12 in front of City Hall, 9th and Asbury Ave. These include a Yawn Along to the tune of Beautiful Dreamer, a performance by the world’s only Wind Chimes Band, kite flying with Air Circus, a quiet song by Nancy Fox, leaf squeezing, a Maple Pod Drop and bubbles galore.

FUND RAISERS: The American Legion Morvay-Miley Post 524 offers another of its famous PANCAKE BREAKFASTS on Sun., Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. till noon at the Masonic Hall, 10th and Wesley Ave. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea, milk and juice, Adults $5 and children $3. Proceeds benefit Veterans projects.
The American Legion Auxiliary is sponsoring a Cookie Drive (homemade or store purchased) through Nov. 17. Cookies will be distributed to our troops through the USO.

The 5th Annual Ocean City High School Scholarship Dinner is set for Thurs., Nov.11 from 5-7 p.m. at the Ocean City High School Cafeteria, 5th and Atlantic Ave. Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for children 10 and under. Children 3 and under are free.

The Four Paws Reception to benefit the Ocean City Humane Society is set from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Flanders Hotel, 11th and Boardwalk on Fri., Nov. 19. Veterans Day will be observed in Ocean City 11 a.m., Thurs., Nov. 11th at Veterans Memorial Park, 5th and Wesley Ave. The ceremony will include comments from an active duty service member and World War II veteran, Gam Broadley.
The colors will be presented by the Dramis Detachment Marine Corps League. Students from the Ocean City Primary School will offer a tribute to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces and the Ocean City High School Band will play a selection of patriotic tunes. High School Senior, Lexis Petrilla, will sing the Star Spangled Banner.
In case of rain, the program will be held inside the Ocean City Tabernacle auditorium across the street from the Memorial Field.
The Ocean City Arts Center will display the winning paintings of its juried art show through November at its Gallery, 1735 Simpson Ave.
