What’s Happening in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY – Consul General Mario De Leon, Jr. of the Philippines visited Ocean City on April 19 to confer with Mayor Jay Gillian. They will discuss final plans for Ocean City’s third annual Tribute to the Philippines in July and other cooperative tourism promotions.
The Consul General was accompanied by Consul Zaldy Patron and Ms. Hermie Aczcon, President of the Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia. The meeting will be held in the mayor’s office.
Ocean City Legends Book Now Available:
Local authors Fred and Susan Miller’s new book, Ocean City Legends, has just been released by Arcadia Publishing of Charleston, South Carolina. “Legendary Locals” is filled with 180 photographs and focuses on newsworthy and noteworthy individuals and groups who have helped shape the community since its inception in 1879.
The authors held a press conference April 18 at the Ocean City Historical Museum. There will be a power point and book signing presentation on Thurs., April 26 at 7 p.m. at the Ocean City Library, free and open to the public co-sponsored by the Library and Museum. Book signings will also be held on Sat., April 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on May 5, Block Party Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.at Sunrose Words and Music in Ocean City.
Basketball Legend Chris Herren to Speak in Ocean City:
Chris Herren realized his dreams playing for the Boston Celtics only to lose it all to addiction before rising to a new dream. Herren has trained over 200 basketball players including some of the top prospects in New England. Off court, he continues to share his stories of abuse with audiences in hopes of reaching just one person and making a difference in their life. His memoir, “Basketball Junkie” was released last year and a documentary, based on his journey, aired as part of ESPN’s 30 for 30 series.
Herren will speak on Thurs., April 26 at the Ocean City High School Gymnasium at 7p.m. Doors open 5:30 p.m., admission free. Seating first come, first served. A live feed on the presentation will be available at the Ocean City Free Public Library. The program is presented by the Ocean City Education Foundation, the Ocean City Free Public Library, Jay and Michele Gillian, the Ocean City PTA and the Ocean City Police and Fire Departments.
Ocean City Legend to Receive Golden Deeds Award:
Peggy Lloyd, recently named an Ocean City Legend in the book mentioned above, will receive the Ocean City Exchange Club’s “Book of Golden Deeds Award” for her contributions to the Community over the decades. Ninety nine years young , Peggy has been active in the community’s arts and music programs and has been vice president of the Ocean City Arts Center for more than 30 years. During World War ll she was a newspaper correspondent and also served as the chaperone to Miss America for many years. Her goal is to inspire children with love of the arts. Peggy inspires all who know her with her enthusiasm.
The presentation was made on April 23 at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point.

(April 28) The Annual Ocean City Yard Sale will be held on Sat., April 28 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tabernacle Grounds, 5th and Asbury and locations throughout the City. For locations available at the Tabernacle, call 609-398-4662or stop at the Chamber of Commerce Office, 16 E 9th St. to pick up an application. Spots are $30 or $35 with a table. Anyone interested in having their home yard sale listed on the citywide map, can do so for $10. Home must be registered by April 24.

(April 29) The March of Dimes March for the Babies South Jersey Shore 2012 is a five mile walk beginning and ending at the Music Pier. Registration begins at noon, walk at 1 p.m. and will end with light refreshments, activities for children, music and face painting. The event is also in need of volunteers and donations of snacks for the day of the event. Reminder: Ocean City’s popular mile-long Spring Block Party is set for Sat., May 5 from 9 a.m. to
