OCEAN CITY – What’s happening in Ocean City? Well, there are a couple of things…
July 21: The World Famous Ferko String Band will perform 8 p.m., Thurs., July 21 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Tickets are $12, available at the Music Pier Box Office, 609-525-9248.
Formed in 1922, the Ferko String Band established the most successful record of wins in the history of the Philadelphia Mummers Parade. The Band has strutted away with first place 20 times and placed in the top five an amazing 82 out of 88 parades. Today the Band is as strong as ever with over 90 members ranging from 50 to 80 years of age.
From New York to France, New Orleans to Italy, Texas to Hong Kong and all points in between Ferko has wowed audiences with its unique music and costumes. The band has a series of hit records including Alabama Jubilee, You Are My Sunshine, Ain’t That A Shame and That Old Black Magic.
July 22: The Glenn Miller Orchestra rolls into the Music Pier on the Chattanooga Choo Choo, Fri., July 22 at 8 p.m. The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all the dance band leaders in the Swing era of the 1930s and 40s. A matchless string of hits, the constant impact of radio broadcasts and his drawing power at theaters, hotels and dance pavilions built and sustained the momentum of popularity. His recording of Chattanooga Choo Choo was the first Gold Record ever awarded to a performing artist.
Glenn Miller’s theme was the beautiful Moonlight Serenade and it is still the signature tune of the Glenn Miller Orchestra today. Glenn Miller wrote the music himself as an exercise in a course on arranging.
Tickets are now on sale for the Glenn Miller Orchestra at the Music Pier Box Office, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, 609-525-9248. The Box Office is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 on the day of the show.
July 23-24: Ocean City will hold its second annual Tribute To the Phillipines July 23-24. The celebration will be centered at the City’s historic Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. It will include a Craft and Trades exhibition and Tourism Fair, an entertainment program featuring Filipino and American music and a Consular Out Reach Service. During the Consular Outreach Service, a team from the Philippine Consulate General in New York will be at the Pier to process the applications for passport, notarization and dual citizenship of Filipino nationals.
The Craft and Trades exhibition will be held in the Pavilion area of the Music Pier adjacent to the auditorium. It will feature displays of crafts including clothing, pottery, music, exotic lanterns, hand bags, photography plus foods and many other items. There will be special displays by the Philippine Department of Tourism, Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, City of Ocean City, Ocean City Board of Realtors and Western Union, major sponsors of the event.
Air Circus of Ocean City will present a Yo Yo, demonstrations during exhibit hours. The Yo Yo was invented in the Philippines and the word means “return-return” in the Filipino language. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sat., July 23 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sun., July 24.Admission is free and there will be giveaway items from exhibitors.
An opening ceremony is set for July 23 at 11 a.m. in front of the Music Pier including members of the Philippine Consulate, City officials and representatives of the Chamber Commerce and the business community.
On Sat. at 8 p.m., the Filipino-American Tribute Show will be held in the Music Pier Auditorium. It will be hosted by Rene P. Sese, Filipino American singing sensation,who will sing both Filipino and American standards. Featured Band will be Tidal Wave, a popular group that specializes in Beach Boy and classic rock.
Featured in the show will be teenage vocalist Nina Sophia Mojares who was selected out of 70,000 acts to perform as a semi-finalist on NBC’s, America’s Got Talent before celebrity judges Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandell. She was featured in FOX 5 Good Day New York’s musical presentation of Bye Bye Birdie, appeared on the Maury Povich Show and named Most Talented Kid and also appeared on GMA7-24 Oras and ABS-CBN Philippine Networks as the “most promising singing star in the U.S.
Also featured are singer, Monica Castillo Meares, April Talangbayan, a flute playing dancer who has wowed audiences throughout the Delaware Valley and New York and Hula dancer Betty Harshaw. The championship Air Circus Yo Yo Team will open the show. Admission is $10.Tickets are available at the Music Pier Box Office, open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily or at the door. Children are free.
Two years ago, Ocean City formed a Sister City relationship with San Jose Occidental Mindoro of the Philippines and this has led to the Tribute to the Philippines that last year was visited by several thousands of Filipino Americans and their friends. Rene Sese, who lives in Ocean City and is a native of the Philippines, was instrumental in arranging the Sister City relationship.
July 23: The 31st Annual T. John Carey Masters Swim. Registration between 3 and 6 p.m. at the beach patrol station, 34th and Beach. The race starts 6:30 p.m. Call 609-525-9201.
July 24: Nor’easters Soccer game versus the Brooklyn Knights 6 p.m. at Carey Stadium, 6th and Atlantic Ave. Adults $6, Youth $4. Last home game of the season. Call 609-525-9999 for information.
July 24: The Ocean City Pops presents Maestro Scheible’s 25th Anniversary concert with the Pops. Performers include violinist Robyn Bollinger, acclaimed soprano Michelle Johnson, baritone Steven LaBrie and Lisa and Todd Thomas, 8 p.m. at Music Pier. July 26: The Ocean City Pops presents the Best of the Pops with singers Michelle Johnson and Steven LaBrie., 8 p.m. at Music Pier, tickets $15/$10 at Pier Box Office.
July 27: The OCBP Women’s Lifeguard Invitational Races, 34th and Beach, 6:15 p.m. Women from 15 South Jersey Patrols will compete. Call 609-525-9201.
