OCEAN CITY – What’s happening in Ocean City? Well, there are a couple of things…
Aug. 17-19: Weird Contest Week continues with That’s The Way The Cookie Crumbles, your opportunity to chew a work of art out of a huge Chocolate Chipper provided by Wards Pastry. The contest begins 11 a.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Entry is free. There are categories for all age groups. Prizes are awarded.
Highlight of the morning will be the presentation of the first IMMY Award set for 11 a.m. just before the contest starts. The IMMY is a Celebration of the Imagination and is given to a person who uses his or her imagination for a good cause. The first winner will be Jerome “Jerry” Lukas of Virginia, a noted cartoonist and commercial artist.
Lukas is on the road much of the time and when at airports, restaurants, meetings and parties draws free cartoons for people to brighten their day. He has presented cartoons to over 1300 persons since Jan. 1.
Lukas will draw free cartoons after the award ceremony. He asks folks to name their favorite animal, then draws it adding a personal dedication to the artwork.
Weird Contest Week continues on Aug. 18 with paper clip sculpting and concludes on Fri., Aug. 19 with Little Miss Chaos and Little Mr. Chaos and Mr. and Miss Miscellaneous. The Chaos contests ask children 3-5 years of age to create as much noise as possible in two minutes with pots and pans, plastic hammers and other implements of minor destruction. The Miscellaneous contest is for all those who have always wanted to perform in a talent contest but maybe missed the bus or got stuck at a Rugby Game. For information, call 609-525-9300.
Aug. 19: A new Little Miss Ocean City will be selected at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace during a Pageant starting 7 p.m. Tickets are $10, available at the Pier Box Office, (609) 525-9248. The reigning Little Miss, Sadie Ford, will preside over the scholarship pageant for girls 8-11. Sadie has been an outstanding Little Miss having represented the City at many events including Night In Venice, the Baby Parade, our Block Parties and the many unusual contests that Ocean City holds including Weird Contest Week, the Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant, the Pamper Scamper, Sand Sculpting etc. The Pageant is sponsored by the Ocean City Recreation Division.
Every Mon. in Aug: The N.J. Dept. of Transportation Bicycle Project Draft Report will be presented 6 p.m., at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th and Simpson Ave. The public is invited to view the recommendations for the City’s Bicycle Boulevard, reports the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Aug. 17-18: The Ocean City Pops presents the Broadway Musical Annie, full staged and directed by Michael Hartman, at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center, 212 Berry Dr., Cape May Court House. Tickets are $20 for adults $15 for children. Call 609-463-1924.
Aug. 20: Fr. Kennedy’s Happy Home Orphanage Walk-a-Thon 9 a.m. till noon in front of the Music Pier. Annual Walk to raise money for Fr. John Kennedy’s Happy Home Orphanage in India, the refuge for preteen girls left orphaned by the 2004 Tsunami.
Aug. 21: The Ocean City Pops presents The Highlights from Carmen. Hear Bizet’s masterpiece with a full cast of singers, 8 p.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Tickets $20/12 at Music Pier Box Office, (609)525-9248.
Aug. 21: The Matthews Brothers-voice, trumpet, piano and organ will be featured in concert at the Ocean City Tabernacle, 5th and Wesley Ave., at 7 p.m. Plus Festival Choirs. Admission is free. Call (609-399-1915)
Aug. 22: The Abbamania Concert, a tribute to the band Abba. Hear all the Abba hits: Dancing Queen, Fernando, Waterloo and SOS, an extraordinary recreation of the great band’s magical performances. 8 p.m. at the Music Pier. Tickets $30 at the Pier Box Office, 609-525-9248.
Aug.23: The Ocean City Pops presents Cirque de la Symphony, back by popular demand. Artists featured will be the most exceptional Cirque performers throughout the world: aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers and balancers, all performing to the exciting music of the Pops, 8 p.m. at the Music Pier. Aug: 17: The Ocean City Free Public Library continues its outstanding series of programs with a lecture on the Monarch Butterfly on Wed., Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Main Lecture Room N110. Learn all about the beautiful butterflies that make N.J. their temporary home, their lifecycle, migration habits and needs. The program is presented by the N.J. Audubon and Nature Center.
Aug: 24: A Show Me the Mummy Talk is set for Wed., Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Main Lecture Room. Stephen Hill of the University of Pennsylvania will tell you all you ever wanted to know about Mummies during this interesting program.
Aug. 25: Hymns in History with Richard and Rebecca Stanislaw will be the topic of an informative program on Thurs., Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Main Lecture Room.
Aug. 30: New York Times Best Selling author, Richard Paul Evans, will visit Ocean City and speak about the “Power of “Books.” He will talk about the power of books to change individuals and countries.
He has written 12 New York Times Best Sellers. His first book, The Christmas Box, sold over eight million copies. His books have been translated into 22 languages and several have been international best sellers.
