OCEAN CITY – What’s happening in Ocean City? Well, there are a couple of things…
Reminder: The Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant and Hermit Crab Races are set for 1 p.m. Aug. 3 on the 6th St. Beach and the City’s second Sand Sculpting Contest of the season will start 9 a.m. on the 6th St. Beach also on Aug. 3. Weather Advisory: In the advent of all day rain and Thunderstorms on Wednesday, the Hermit Crab events will be held inside the Sports and Civic Center, 6th St. off Boardwalk, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. The Sand Sculpting contest will be postponed until Thursday 9 a.m. at the 6th St. Beach. Call 609-364-4010 for update Wednesday morning.
The 49th Annual BOARDWALK ART SHOW is set for Fri. to Sun., Aug. 5-7. Show hours have been extended and are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Arts Center Director, Rosalyn Lifshin says now artists will be able to exhibit in front of thousands of evening visitors.
Pottery, handmade furniture and sculpture have been added to the show in addition to oil and acrylics. The exhibit offers visitors an opportunity to purchase outstanding artwork minus gallery commissions.

Aug. 4-6: The popular ART OF SURFING Exhibition is set for the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, with hours 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thurs. and noon till 10 p.m. Fri. and Sat. This free show features original art from surfing’s biggest names, plus live music and a chance to meet artists from across the country. For information, call (609)-744-3229.
Aug. 11: Ocean City’s 102nd Annual BABY PARADE, the longest consecutively run in the nation, is set for Thursday, Aug. 11th. The colorful event begins at 10:15 a.m. Parade route is from 6th to 12th Sts. on the Boardwalk.
Ocean City leads the world in holding the most Baby Parades. No other community or organization has held 100 parades, let alone 102. This year’s Parade is dedicated to the memory of Doris and Dutch Dahlhausen, who directed the event for 23 years.
The parade competition is open to children from infants to ten years of age. Parents may register at the Music Pier Information Center, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. The Center is open every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Forms are also available at City Hall Annex, 901 Asbury Ave., open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For information, call (609) 525-9300. After hours, call (609) 364-4010 or email msoifer@hotmail.com. Deadline for registration is Tuesday, Aug. 9 at noon.
Divisions include Fancy Decorated Go Carts, Strollers, Coaches, Express Wagons etc; Comic Decorated Go Carts; Strollers, Coaches, etc.; Small Children’s Floats, all vehicles including express wagons and baby carriages with tops or sides built on measuring more than three by five feet and Commercial and Non-Commercial large floats.
Entry fee is $5 per child and $10 for commercial floats. All children receive a commemorative gift for being in the parade.
The Ocean City Baby Parade was founded by Leo Bamberger and his committee. Bamberger, a photo engraver, was one of the organizers of Labor Day. The Parade is now directed by Susan Canale who heads a committee of 40 volunteers.
Musical groups that will be featured in the event include the Interboro High School of Pennsylvania Marching Band, the Pitman Hobo Band, The Atlantic City Bagpipers, The Fred Hall Dixieland Band, An Award Winning Youth Color Guard with music and marchers and the Ed Coles Entertainers.

Aug 7: Ken Medema, composer, pianist, vocalist from San Francisco, performs at the Ocean City Tabernacle, 5th and Wesley Ave. at 7 p.m. Program includes the Tabernacle Choir. Admission is free. Call (609) 399-1915.
Aug. 8: Herman’s Hermits featuring Peter Noone entertains at the Music Pier, 8 p.m. This legendary rock group has sold over 8 million records and scored twenty Top Twenty hits including I’m Henry the Vlll, I am and Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter. Aug. 9: The popular Pamper Scamper Baby Crawling Race: 9a.m. registration, 9:30 a.m. start at the 6th St. Beach. The race is for babies 15 months and younger. The event is a prelude to the Baby Parade.
Aug. 9-10: The Ocean City Pops presents-Broadway Tribute with singers Krissy Fraelich and Jeffrey Coon with songs from Evita, Funny Girl, Guys and Dolls plus Cole Porter favorites, 8 p.m. at the Music Pier. Tickets are $20 and $12 at Pier Box Office.
Aug. 10: School House Rock Live, 10:30 a.m. at Music Pier, presented by Ocean City Theatre Co. Tickets $9 at Pier Box Office (609) 525-9248.
Aug. 13: Miss Ocean City Pageant, 8 p.m. at Music Pier. New Miss Ocean City will be crowned following competition sponsored by the Ocean City Exchange Club. Tickets $15 at Music Pier Box Office the week of the Pageant.
The Ocean City FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY, 17th and Simpson Ave., has a huge schedule of August events that includes free concerts, interesting lectures, free classic films and even a fabric, marbilizing workshop.
For instance, Fri., Aug. 5 at 7 p.m., there will be a free concert by Package Goods in the Main Lecture Room N110. The group’s music runs the gamut of folk, rock, country, swing, torch and R&B. Then Sam Sardina will present a One Man Band Concert in the Main Lecture Room on Sun., Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. singing classics by Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Billy Joel and Harry Connick Jr.
Free Saturday 2 p.m. movies include Rio (G) on Aug. 13 and Rango (PG) on Aug. 27 to be shown in Main Lecture Room. For information, call the Reference Desk.
The lectures offered run the gamut of Show Me the Mummy! , the inside info on mummies and ancient Egyptian literature, art and cinema on Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. to a talk about the eventful journey of Monarch Butterflies on Wed., Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Main Lecture Room.
