STONE HARBOR – Check out these upcoming events at the Wetlands Institute in August!
Kayak Kamp at the Wetlands Institute
Learn the basics of kayaking or build on your skills at a three-day Kayak Kamp at the Wetlands Institute Aug. 3, 4 and 4 for young paddlers, ages 12 to 17. Learn the basics up to advanced skills including paddling in all conditions, techniques to go farther and faster with less effort, wet exits, re-entries and other rescue skills. Long paddling trips are also included
Cost is $125 for members; $140 nonmembers. For information call 368-1211.
Fabulous Family Nights
Fabulous Family Nights continue through the summer Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM at the Wetlands Institute, 1075 Stone Harbor Blvd., Stone Harbor, with exciting entertainment for children of all ages with special guests and live animals from reptiles, to raptors, dinosaurs to seals. $8 adult members, $9 nonmembers; children under 12, $6 member, $7 nonmember. 10% discount for families of four or more. Dune and Beach Walks
Learn more about the beach, plants, dunes during interpretive walks Wednesdays throughout the summer at 9 a.m. Learn more about the maritime forest and dunes that once covered the entire island with a guided walk that leaves from the trailhead at 48th and Dune Drive in Avalon. Donation is $3.
Kayaking
Paddle the back bays in a kayak with a guide on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 AM and 12:30 PM and Friday at 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM for a three-hour tour of the coastal marsh ecosystems. Single and tandem kayaks are available. $49 per person.
Or, enjoy the sunset while kayaking at dusk as birds head to their roost and wildlife feeds in the marshes. Sunset kayak tours are Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:30 PM. $49 for a single kayak and $54 for a tandem. Wetlands Institute, 1075 Stone Harbor Blvd., Stone Harbor. 368-1211.
Full Moon Paddling in August
Head out as the sun sets and the moon rises for full moon paddling Aug. 12 and 13, 7 to 10 PM. Adults only; $49 per person. Call the Wetlands Institute, 1075 Stone Harbor Blvd., Stone Harbor, 368-1211, for information.
Exploration Point
Bring your beach combing buckets and start you beach vacation with an exploration of Stone Harbor Point for awesome seashells, cool birds, fun things that live under the sand and even some sand castle building tips. Mondays , 9:30 AM. for ages 3 to with parents at the 122nd St. trailhead, Stone Harbor. Donation is $3.
Dog Paddle
Bring your hound, pooch or pup for an hour of canine socialization, play and swimming. Learn how dogs impact beach nesting birds and how to see nature through a dog’s eyes – and nose! Leashes required and please bring a clean-up bag. Water and cookies provided. Meet at the 96th Street beach entrance in Stone Harbor on Wednesdays, 7 to 8 PM. $3 donation.
