Meet amazing animals, explore interesting habitats, make new friends and have fun at the Wetlands Institute’s Summer Nature Classes that run through August.
The summer program is a hands-on way for youngsters of all ages to learn about the natural surroundings of the Jersey Shore with discovery, games, trips and more.
Kindergarteners and youngsters through 6th grade can choose classes about crabs and turtles, birds and bugs for a fun, hands-on way to learn about natural surroundings at the Jersey Shore as they explore the marsh and beach with a special focus each week.
For kindergarten youngsters, classes are Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to noon; for grades one to six, classes are Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Wednesday the kindergarteners meet at the beach. Older kids meet on the beach Tuesday, and Thursday is field trip day.
All classes are offered for the grade level students will complete in June 2009.
Seventh, 8th and 9th graders can explore the coastal environment, met professionals in the field of science and learn a lot by getting muddy in the Junior Naturalist Experience. Five one-week sessions Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. begin in July.
The Wetlands Institute is also hosting the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival for a one-night appearance June 12 from 6 to 10 p.m.
The evening, sponsored by Global Pursuit, will feature award-winning films covering a variety of topics—surfing, climbing, global warming, recycling, turtles, cartoons, and more.
The film festival is currently on tour around the country and this is its only local stop.
Enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and a fascinating evening learning how big things come from small ideas.

Now a round of golf can help fund research for terrapins and red knots or help scientists with coastal ecology projects with the institute’s 19th annual golf tournament on June 15 at Sand Barrens Golf Club in Swainton.
The day features a shot gun start at 1 p.m. after lunch with prizes, the famous “Chip-in-the Boat” contest, and a $10,000 putting contest.
Registration fee is $185 and includes lunch, greens fees and cart, cocktails, and dinner. Registration deadline is June 8.
