COURT HOUSE – These are the upcoming library programs for the month of July 2013.
July 13, 27, Aug. 3
County Library Offers Teens “Tales Writer” Workshop
The Cape May County Library invites teens, ages 12 to 18, to participate in a series of Teen Tales Writer’s Workshops with author Keri Mikulski on Saturdays throughout the summer. The workshops will be held at 11 a.m. on the following days: July 13, July 27 and August 3 at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
If you enjoy creative writing, join us for a special series of writing workshops with local YA author of Head Games (2011), Stealing Bases (2011), Making Waves (2012) and Fifteen Love (2012).

County Library Offers Crafts & Fun for Children
The Cape May County Library invites children 3 to 12 years old and their families to a series of craft programs all about Buried Treasure! The programs will be held at each library branch during the month of July.
You won’t have to dig too hard to find this treasure! Come to the library for a fun time of crafts and activities, which include making your own time capsule, mummy magnet and a pirate treasure chest. While this program is best suited for kids ages 3 to 12 and their families, kids birth to 12 years old are welcome.

The Cape May County Library invites the public to the “Cape Cuisine: Healthy Safe Picnic” lecture with Chef Mark Kalla at 1 p.m. on July 9. The program will take place at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. Chef Kalla will explore the makings of a festive summer picnic to include cold hors d’oeuvres, sandwiches, wraps, side dishes and salads to make an al fresco feast. Chef Kalla will make a dessert that will travel well, as well as go over the dos and don’ts for packing a safe picnic.

County Library Hosts Lecture on Nature
The Cape May County Library invites the public to come to the lecture, “Nature Notes” given by Don Freiday at 7 p.m. on July 10. The lecture will take place at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
Take a look at the natural world of Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland Counties and learn the ins and outs of South Jersey’s nature scene. Birds, mammals, flowers, insects and much more, all come under the spotlight as we look at what to expect now and in the coming month.

County Library Offers Basic Crochet Class
The Cape May County Library will hold the class, “Amigurumi Crochet: Potted Plant” with Jennifer Bolton. This four-week course begins at 1 p.m. on July 11 at the Lower Cape Library, 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas.
This is a beginner’s crochet project, however it would be helpful to know how to chain stitch. During the first class, you will be learning how to crochet in the round, increase and decrease. All of these techniques are needed for projects such as making hats and crochet animals. Students will need a size G hook and four skeins of yarn, plus stuffing for the project. The required colors for yarn are terracotta, green and two colors of your choice for the flowers.

County Library Hosts Natural History Lecture
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend the lecture, “Natural Cape May” given by Mike Crewe at 6 p.m. on July 11. The lecture will take place at the Cape May Library, 110 Ocean Street, Cape May City.
Take a look at the natural world in Cape May County and find out what is happening in the world beyond. Birds, mammals, flowers, insects and much more, all come under the spotlight as we look at what to expect now and in the coming month.

County Library Hosts Mosaic Workshop
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend the workshop, “Create a Mosaic Nightlight” with Michele Pasciullo. This two-day workshop will be held on July 12 and 19 at 1 p.m. at the Sea Isle City Library, 4800 Central Avenue, Sea Isle City. Learn the diverse and useful art of mosaic while creating a functional nightlight to beautify your home. You will use colorful stained glass pieces to design your own masterpiece.

County Library Hosts Teen Iron Chef Competition
The Cape May County Library invites teens 12 to 18 to participate in the annual Teen Iron Chef competition at 1 p.m. on July 13 at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
Teen Iron Chef is back! What will the secret ingredient be? Register as a team with two of your friends or by yourself and be added to a group. No cooking skills are required to participate.

County Library Hosts Chocolate Sculpture Class for Teens
The Cape May County Library invites teens ages 12 to 18 to the program, Teens Get Crafty: Moldable Chocolate Sculptures in July. The first program will take place at 1 p.m. on July 15 at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. The second program will take place at 1 p.m. on July 19 at the Upper Cape Library, 2050 Route 631, Petersburg.
Teens are invited to unleash their creativity at the Cape May County Library by making sculptures out of moldable chocolate. You can even eat your creations when you’re done!

County Library Hosts Poetry Reading
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend The Beach Bards Poetry Reading Series for 2013. The Beach Bards will present a program featuring two distinguished poets every third Monday of the month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. On July 15, poets Joanie DiMartino and Wendy E. Kaplan will be reading from their original works. This poetry series will run through October and will take place at the Sea Isle City Library, 4800 Central Avenue, Sea Isle City
Joanie DiMartino’s first full-length poetry collection, Strange Girls, was published in 2010 by Little Red Tree Publishing. Her first chapbook, Licking the Spoon, was published by Finishing Line Press. DiMartino is a past winner of the Betty Gabehart Award for poetry from the Women Writers Conference, Kentucky and was a finalist in the Cultural Center of Cape Cod Poetry Competition. Most recently, DiMartino was featured in the exhibit “Women in the Arts,” where her portrait and poem, Self-Portrait, were on display at ArtWorks in Norwich, Connecticut. She lives in Mystic, Connecticut.
Wendy E. Kaplan holds a Certificate in Poetry from the Downtown Writers Center in Syracuse, NY, and a Masters in Social Work; she has practiced as a mental health counselor and as a grief therapist at Hospice of Central New York. This year, two of Kaplan’s poems that were published in Shot Glass Journal were nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Now she enjoys her work at the Cape May County Library and resides primarily in Cape May.

County Library Hosts a Performance “The Secret Garden”
The Cape May County Library invites children ages 5 to 12 and their families to performances of “The Secret Garden” with The Hampstead Stage Company. This Summer Reading Club event will take place at every branch of the library during the month of July. The Hampstead Stage Company presents Frances Hodgson Burnett’s “The Secret Garden,” an enchanting story about a young orphan girl, Mary Lennox, who comes to live with her uncle in the English countryside. Through her curiosity and determination, Mary finds a garden filled with memories that has been locked for years.

The Cape May County Library invites teens 12 to 18 to the program, Teens Get Crafty: Tie-Dye T-Shirts. The classes will take place at 1 p.m. on July 16 at the Lower Cape Library, 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas and at 1 p.m. on July 24 at the Sea Isle City Library, 4800 Central Avenue, Sea Isle City. County Library Offers Second Level Computer Class
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “My Second Computer Class” given by the Technology Learning Center at 6 p.m. on July 16. The class will take place at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. In this class, you will learn about hardware and software and how they work together.

County Library Offers Clay Building Workshop
The Cape May County Library invites the public to the workshop, “Hand Building with Clay” with Jennifer Boyce. This four-week workshop starts at 10 a.m. on July 17 at the Upper Cape Library located at 2050 Route 631, Petersburg.
Students will explore various hand-building techniques while creating their own pieces such as tiles, wall pockets and sconces, bowls, dishes and other eclectic sculptures. Demonstrations will include slab-building, pinching and extrusion. Surface decoration will include applied textures and glaze application. Class size is limited; therefore, registration and a valid library card are required. A $10 non-refundable materials fee is due upon registration. County Library Hosts Memorial for Storm of ‘62
The Cape May County Library, in partnership with the Sea Isle City Historical Museum, invites the public to join us in “Remembering the Storm of ‘62”. The memorial will take place on July 17 and July 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Sea Isle City Library, 4800 Central Avenue, Sea Isle City. March 6, 2013 marked the 51st anniversary of the worst storm to hit the New Jersey coast in recorded history. To mark this historic event, the Sea Isle City Historical Museum has invited several eye witnesses to share their stories from the storm of 1962.

County Library Hosts Hawaiian Luau Cooking Demonstration
The Cape May County Library invites the public to come to the “Hawaiian Luau Cooking Demonstration” with Chef James Harris at 1 p.m. on July 18. The demonstration will take place at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. Join us for an exciting demonstration on how to cook a delicious feast inspired from the Ahola State. Chef Harris has created some wonderful recipes to share with you. On the menu for the day will be tuna poke in lettuce cups, macadamia-crusted mahi mahi, island sweet potatoes and mixed greens with shoyu ginger vinaigrette.

County Library Offers Picasa Program
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend the program, “Picasa Basics” given by the Technology Learning Center at 2 p.m. on July 18. The program will take place at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
Picasa is a free software program that helps you organize and edit your photos. In this program, you will learn the basics so that you can make your favorite photos better and share them with friends.

County Library Hosts U. S. Ambassador Theresa Tull
The Cape May County Library invites the public to meet Ambassador Theresa Tull as she visits the Library in July. The program will take place at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 22nd at the Sea Isle Library, 4800 Central Avenue, Sea Isle City.
Tull’s career as a diplomat has taken her to Saigon, Laos, Da Nang, Cebu, Brunei and Guyana. In her book, “A Long Way from Runnemede: One Woman’s Foreign Service Journey”, Tull chronicles her story from her beginnings in Runnemede, NJ through her career as an U.S. diplomat.
Tull was in Saigon just in time for the Tet Offensive of 1968. In 1983, she oversaw the first joint crash-site excavation to seek the remains of missing U.S. servicemen in Laos. Subsequently, she served as ambassador to Guyana and Brunei. Tull served as deputy principal officer to the U.S. Consulate General in Da Nang, where she remained until the fall of Vietnam in the spring of 1975, when she organized and oversaw the evacuation of the American and Vietnamese employees of the consulate general.
After retiring in 1996, Tull divides her time between Sea Isle City, N.J. and Washington D.C. For additional information, please call 263-6386 or visit online at www.cmclibrary.org.

The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend the lecture, “Garden Lecture: What’s Hot or Not in the Garden” with Joe Alvarez at 6 p.m. on July 22. The lecture will take place at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. Come and see the latest from the horticulture industry. Check out the new “what’s hot or not” of the perennial and annual flowers, along with shrubs, trees and newly available heirloom vegetables from our local Cape May County nurseries.. Learn how to spice up your garden with color, texture and scents which will make you the envy of your little corner of the garden world.

County Library Offers Course on Foreign Languages
The Cape May County Library will offer a four-week course, “Introduction to Foreign Languages from A-Z” with Dr. Ralph Carrozza. This course will take place on July 23 at 6 p.m. at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
Learn basic phrases, words and greetings in over two dozen languages including Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Mandarin and Korean. Students will receive all necessary course material including word lists and a full-color world map courtesy of “Doctors Without Borders.” This is an ideal course for anyone coming into contact with people from foreign countries such as teachers, administrators, health care providers, bankers, sales people and world travelers. It can also enhance a resume to increase career and employment opportunities.

County Library Offers Beaded Bracelet Workshop
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend the “Simple Peyote Bead Weaving Bracelet Workshop” with Betty Tocci. This two-day workshop will be held on July 23 and Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. If you are interested in basic jewelry, beading techniques and creative thinking, then this class is for you! Participants will learn how to design and create a beautiful piece of jewelry to wear everyday or for special occasions. At the end of this two-day workshop, participants will have a completed peyote beaded bracelet.

County Library Offers Advanced Computer Class
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “My Third Computer Class” given by the Technology Learning Center at 6 p.m. on July 24. The class will take place at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. You have learned the basics of using a computer and how it works, now it’s time to take it to the next level. In this class, you will learn a few concepts on how to use your computer like a pro. You will also learn how to do basic computer tasks, from finding your way around the computer to going online. This will be in a Windows based setting.

County Library Offers Pinterest Demonstration
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend the demonstration, “Pinterest” given by Melissa Brisbinat at 2 p.m. on July 25. The demonstration will take place at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. Pinterest is one of the most popular social networking sites. Pinterest allows users to create themes called “boards” where users can share or “pin” images from various sites, blogs or personal photos. Link your pins to your Facebook and Twitter friends or followers. Join us for a one hour demonstration on how to setup and use Pinterest and become knowledgeable in the popular site.

The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend the program, “Using OverDrive” presented by the Technology Learning Center at 6 p.m. on July 30. The program will take place at the Main Library, 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. OverDrive and its app Media Console will get you reading ebooks at home and on the go. Learn how to navigate this multi-faceted tool, which offers over one million titles, including audio books.

County Library Offers Teens a Class on How to Make Salt & Sugar Scrubs
The Cape May County Library invites teens 12 to 18 to the program, Teens Get Crafty: DIY Salt & Sugar Scrubs to be held at 1 p.m. on July 30 at the Lower Cape Library, 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas.
Summer can take a toll on your skin. Teens are invited to make lip balms and salt/sugar-based foot scrubs to keep their skin feeling fabulously smooth!

The Cape May County Library invites children ages 3 to 12 years old and their families to a series of shows called “Magic You Will Dig!” with Mike Rose. The shows will be held at each library branch during the month of July.
Experience a magic show that is unlike any other! “Magic You Will Dig!” consists of impossible magic tricks, weird mind reading stunts and off the wall comedy all themed around things that occur in the ground; you know, dirt!
