COURT HOUSE – Here are some upcoming Cape May County Government events taking place in February.
Celebrate Black History Month
The Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro and the Cape May County Division of Culture & Heritage invite you to celebrate Black History Month with “The Legacy of George Henry White,” an exhibit and documentary.
Historian Luke Alexander will speak on the life and legacy of George Henry White, founder of Whitesboro, followed by a showing of the latest documentary of White’s life, “George Henry White, An American Phoenix.” There will be a second showing of the documentary Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. and a closing reception and final showing Feb. 28, also at 7 p.m.
Also, an exhibit on George Henry White and the history of Whitesboro will remain on display for the month of February. The exhibit will be open Thursday through Sunday, from noon until 4 p.m. The exhibit and documentary showings are free and open to the public. The Beesley House is handicapped accessible. “Cape May County Report”
Tune in to see the next “Cape May County Report” Feb. 2, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. on NBC 40. Freeholder Kristine Gabor, Lenora Boninfante and Tonia Ahern, of Parent to Parent, will discuss Drug Addiction and Treatment Programs needed to help addicts and their families in Cape May County.

8th Annual Polar Bear Plunge
Crest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will host their eighth annual Polar Bear Plunge for residents Feb. 3, 2014 starting at 9:45 a.m. in the Recreation Room. The event, coordinated by the Recreation Department, will include a very large kiddy-pool filled with ice water for the residents to “plunge” their feet and cool off their tootsies plus zumba fitness and music by Christine. It is a fun winter activity for the residents. For more information, please call 465-1261.

VA Mobile Outreach Van
The Wilmington VA Mobile Outreach Van will now be coming to Cape May County each month to assist the county’s veterans. The van will be at the Wildwood American Legion Post 184, 4200 Atlantic and Roberts Avenue, Wildwood, New Jersey on the first Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. starting Feb. 4, 2014. The staff on the van will be providing open enrollment for VA medical services through Wilmington VA Hospital which includes the Cape May VA Clinic. To enroll veterans should have with them their service papers/DD Form 214 and medical insurance cards, such as Medicare or supplemental medical insurance. Veterans can schedule an appointment with the Mobile Unit Provider by calling 302-668-4371.

Valentine’s Trip to Visit Veterans
The Cape May County Veterans’ Bureau is sponsoring the 30th Valentine’s trip to the Wilmington V. A. Hospital and New Jersey Veterans’ Memorial Home in Vineland Feb. 12, 2014.
Valentine’s Day cards are being made by Cape May County school children to be distributed to the hospitalized veterans at both facilities. Additionally, veterans’ organizations and their auxiliaries are currently collecting donations from businesses throughout the county for gift bags that will be distributed along with the cards to hospitalized veterans. Cape May County Fare Free Transportation is providing the transportation to either the Wilmington V. A. Hospital or the New Jersey Veterans’ Memorial Home located in Vineland. Buses will depart from the Social Services Building, 4005 Route 9 South in Rio Grande at approximately 8:30 a.m. Refreshments will be available before departure in the Social Services Building.
Any organization, auxiliary or the general public can make a donation or participate to make this trip extra special for our veterans. To reserve a seat on either bus please call the Veterans’ Bureau by Feb. 7, 2014 at 609-886-2762.

CART Meeting
The next meeting of the County’s Animal Response Team or CART will take place Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Operations Room at the County’s Office of Emergency Management located at 30 West Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House, New Jersey.
To-date, over 60 people have volunteered to be part of Cape May County’s first CART. Volunteers include animal care providers, animal control representatives, shelter personnel and the general public.
The CART will assist pet owners in a disaster or weather emergency by providing shelter and care for their pets. Federal and State laws require New Jersey counties to plan for and support the needs of animals and individuals with animals during an emergency. The creation of a CART in Cape May County is just one component of the County’s Sheltering Plan. The County continues to seek volunteers to help with this initiative. Free Workshop: “Take Control of Your Health”
The Cape May County Health Department will present a free six-session health workshop for persons with any ongoing or long-term health condition during February and March. The workshop, “Take Control of Your Health,” will take place at Victorian Towers located at Washington & Ocean Streets in Cape May, New Jersey. Participants in the program will learn how to manage symptoms, how to get started with healthy eating and exercise, how to communicate effectively with your doctor and health care team, how to manage fear, anger and frustration, how to make daily tasks easier and how to get more out of life.
The program, which is open to the public, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, Feb. 19, 26; March 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2014. For more information or to register for the workshop, please call 463-4043.

Citizens Academy
The Cape May County Public Safety Training Center will be holding a Citizens Police Academy starting Feb. 24, 2014. The Academy will take place on Mondays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. through April 21, 2014.
All citizens are invited to sign-up for the Academy, which will provide an overview of the law enforcement function. Topics include Crime Scene Investigation, Juvenile and Criminal Law overview, Police Department Budgeting Activities, Major Crimes and Crime Scene Investigations, Use of Force and K9, CPR and AED certifications and SWAT Team Demonstrations.
