COURT HOUSE – The Cape May Court House and Villas branches of the Cape May County Library will be holding an assortment of activites and events in May. County Library Presents Film Noir Night
The Cape May County Library invites the public to “Film Noir Night” on Monday, May 9th at 6 p.m. at the Main Library located at 30 E. Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
Join us Monday night for a viewing of “Sunset Boulevard” © Paramount Pictures winner of three Academy Awards®. “Sunset Boulevard” is the story of aging silent film star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) enlisting the help of a down and out writer Joe Gillis (William Holden) to make her comeback. The story makes bizarre and unsettling twists and turns as Norma desperately tries to regain her past glory.
Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography.

Chef John Webersinn will present a cooking demonstration on the finer aspects of barbecue on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Main Library located at 30 E. Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
Learn how to achieve greatness at the grill with basic principles of meat selection, preparation and cooking. Be the king or queen at your next event, wowing friends and guests.
As the owner of Time to Dine Personal Chef Services, Chef John provides fresh on-site prepared meals for any occasion and groups from 2 to 200. An honors graduate of the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College, Chef John’s extensive and eclectic culinary skills are a result of his work experiences in diners, country clubs, casinos and gourmet restaurants.

The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “What’s next in the May Garden” presented by Joe Alvarez on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 7 p.m. The program will take place at the Main Library located at 30 E. Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
If you have a question or a problem with your garden, Joe will help you with the next step to a great garden. Topics include fruits and vegetables, houseplants, fertilizers, mulches, annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs and anything else needed for your garden and landscape.
Joseph Alvarez has a Bachelor of Science Degree, is a Board Member of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge and a Certified Rutgers’ Master Gardener.

The Cape May County Library will offer a six-hour basket making workshop with Laurie Schiffelbein. The workshop will be held on Monday, May 16, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Lower Branch Library located at 2600 Bayshore Road in the Villas
Have fun weaving a basket during this one day workshop and create and take home a useful work of art. The workshop is open to beginners and experienced basket weavers alike.
Laurie Schiffelbein has been teaching basket weaving for several years in Cape May. Schiffelbein fell in love with basket weaving during her first workshop in Honolulu, Hawaii and enjoys sharing this traditional craft with her students. She has a degree in Studio Art from Atlantic Cape Community College.
Class size is limited and there is a non-refundable materials fee of $10 due at registration. All participants are required to have a Cape May County Library card in good standing.

The Cape May County Library is hosting a Boating Safety Course presented by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary on May 21, 2011. The course is being offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lower Branch Library located at 2600 Bayshore Road in the Villas.
The Boating Safety class will cover a wide variety of information. Topics include:
-General information about boats and maintenance
-Information on preparing for safe and enjoyable outings
-Navigation rules and aids to navigation
-Guidelines for operating your boat or PWC safely
-What to do in case of boating emergencies
-State-specific laws and regulations you must follow
In general, this information applies to all recreational watercraft such as powerboats, Personal watercrafts, sailboats and boats which are paddled. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a boating education certificate.
Registration is required and a fee of $45 must be paid at the first class. Please make checks payable to U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 8-3.

The Cape May County Library invites advanced patrons of the arts to wet their appetite with an intermediate watercolor course. This six-week course will be held at 10 a.m. on Fridays starting May 20th at the Lower Branch Library located at 2600 Bayshore Road in the Villas.
Instructor Susan Rau will challenge your skills with this vibrantly fun watercolor workshop. If you are looking to step it up, now would be a great time to move forward in the art of watercolor.
Rau has been an artist in South Jersey for many years and teaches at the Ocean City Arts Center and the Ocean City Fine Arts League. Rau shows her work at the OCAC, the OCFAL, the Riverfront Renaissance Arts Center, the Hammonton Arts Center and has a studio at The Consortium on High Street in Millville.
