Throwback Thursday at County 4-H Fair Honors 4-H Queens

COURT HOUSE — The 2014 Cape May County 4-H Fair, July 17, 18 and 19, has many new activities and events in store for fair visitors. One of them is “Throwback Thursday …where have all the 4-H queens gone?”
The 4-H program elected a queen every year at the 4-H Fair from at least 1954 through 1996. In 1996, the contest was changed from queen to Grand Marshall to allow boys to enter, and in 2001, to the Spirit Award. The tradition ended in 2009. July 17, 4-H will honor these very special past representatives of the Cape May County 4-H Program.
Returning queens will be invited to ride in the 4-H Fair Grand Opening Parade at 4:00 p.m. around Betty Jean Lane, then be a part of Opening Ceremonies on the main stage following the parade. There will also be an exhibit featuring 4-H queens in the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center.
Acting 4-H Agent Linda Horner asks readers to help identify past 4-H queens. “We have a list of queens from 1954 forward, and while we still have contact with many of these people, we have lost touch with many others. Our hope is to honor as many as possible at our Throwback Thursday on June 17.” If you know of the whereabouts of any of these 4-H dignitaries from 1954 through 2000, please call Horner at 609-465-5115, or email her at lhorner@co.cape-may.nj.us.
Fri. at the fair brings an antique car show by the Jersey Cape Cruisers from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and a concert by rising Country Music Star and Ventnor native Mia Bergman and her band on Friday evening. Other new events include live herpetology exhibits by the Scales & Tails 4-H Club, a Tote Bag Give-A-Way by the CMC 4-H Foundation, Saw Dogs’ Chain Saw Artist Demonstration and Auction and a Farmers’ Market.
Wizard’s Festival of Fun Amusements will return to the fair this summer with thrilling, safe rides for the whole family, along with new and returning commercial and educational exhibitors. The ever popular Children’s Pet Show, sponsored by Smeltzer & Sons Feed & Pet Supplies, will take place July 19, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on the main stage. All children are invited to bring their favorite dogs, cats, rabbits and other unusual pets for many fun classes, including costumes. Trophies, gift certificates or ribbons will be awarded in all classes. The entry fee is $1.00 per class.
Don’t miss this free showcase of youth held at the 4-H fairgrounds, 355 Courthouse – S. Dennis Road in Cape May Court House, NJ. Public hours for the fair are noon to 9:00 p.m. Thurs. and Fri. and noon to 10:00 p.m. on Sat.
The 4-H Youth Development program is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County. Volunteers are always needed to assist at the 4-H Fair. Please call (609) 465-5115 ext. 605 for more information. Learn more about the Cape May County 4-H Youth Development Program and the 4-H Fair at the 4-H Foundation website cmc4h.com
