This Weekend: Halloween Parades, Film and Fall Festivals

Another of weekend of beautiful autumn weather will compliment outdoor activities this weekend including two Halloween parades, Boo at the Zoo, two outdoor festivals and a movie fest in Cape May.
Sea Isle City’s 2011 Halloween Parade, one of the resort’s many long-standing traditions, will take place Fri., Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. along Landis Avenue (46th-40th Street). According to organizers, this year’s parade promises to be bigger and better than ever, with more music and additional entertainment for all.
The Halloween Parade will feature a wide variety of entrants from local civic groups, clubs, businesses and families. Prizes will be awarded to winning participants in several categories, including Walkers (up to age 12), Walkers (age 13 to adult), Families, Clubs and Organizations, Floats, and Canines in Costume. All dogs walking in the parade must be leashed, licensed and accompanied by an adult.
Immediately following this year’s parade, a free Halloween Family Dance Party will take place at the Excursion Park Band Shell, JFK Boulevard and the Beach. Winning parade entrants will receive their awards at the start of the Dance Party.
The 11th Annual Cape May Film Festival will take place at the Chalfonte Hotel Friday through Sunday.
The Friday night opening features best selling author George Anastasia. A Philadelphia Inquirer reporter on organized crime, Anastasia has a new book, The Ultimate Book of Gangster Movies. He will lead a panel discussion with Soprano’s star Vincent Pasture, director/producer/actor Danny Provenzano, and film enthusiast and Film Festival President Dottie Knapp.
The Fri. night reception and program starts at 7:00 p.m., tickets go on sale at 6 p.m. exclusively at the Chalfonte Hotel lobby.
Saturday daytime at the Film Festival has always been reserved for short films, and this year is no exception. Also Saturday, there will be a screening of films featuring the “Artisans of Cape May” and will include favorites like Stan Sperlak, Victor Grasso, Richard Samuelson, and a host of other artists and musicians in Cape May that will provide the true local flavor for the arts right here in Cape May. The Middle Township Old Tyme Harvest Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mechanic St. in Court House.
There will be rides, games, craft vendors, food court, entertainment, hayrides, and fun for the entire family. Keith Hickman will be performing on the Mechanic Street stage, and Hydeaway will be performing on the main stage.
The annual “Boo at the Zoo” event will take place on Sat., Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Cape May County Zoo. The public is invited to wear your costume to this free family event, which includes games, candy, crafts, entertainment and even a scavenger hunt.
The Halloween costume contest, sponsored by Aramark, will take place at 11 a.m. Registration will start at 10 a.m. in front of Ark in the Park. Entrants will be judged as they parade through the park.
This special event is free and open to the public. Take the entire family to the park and zoo for a day of fun and make sure to visit the more than 500 animals that call the Cape May County Zoo home – including our snow leopard cub born in May.
The Cape May County Zoo is located at 707 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House (Exit 11 off of the Garden State Parkway). The free Zoo is open, weather permitting, 364 days a year – closed on Christmas Day.
People of all ages will enjoy Sea Isle City’s 2011 Octoberfest celebration on Sat., Oct. 22. This enjoyable nod to German culture, hosted by the Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce/Revitalization, will take place at Excursion Park, JFK Boulevard and the Beach, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sea Isle’s Octoberfest activities will include a variety of family fun, including many attractions that kids will love, such as a free moon bounce, giant obstacle course, face painter, balloon-twister and tattoo artist. There will also be a pumpkin painting station, free hay rides on the beach, and live oom-pah music provided by The Philadelphia German Brass Band.
Everyone with a sweet tooth will enjoy the Octoberfest Annual Pie Baking Contest.
Cape May’s 28th annual Halloween Parade will step off at 3 p.m., Sun., Oct. 23 from Lyle Lane and the Rotary Park. Registration begins at 1 p.m., judging and parade formation will start at 2 p.m. and the parade steps off at 3 p.m.
The Parade ends at Emlen Physick Estate where trophies will be awarded for best costumes. Everyone gets a ribbon. Additionally, Trick or Trick on the Mall will also be held Oct. 23 from noon – 2 p.m.
