The Wildwoods’ Battle at the Boards Takes Place Dec. 23

By Press Release

THE WILDWOODS — The 16th Annual Boardwalk Basketball Classic holiday high school tournament will begin with the Battle at the Boards showcase event Dec. 23 at the Wildwoods Convention Center.
The Battle at the Boards, sponsored by Crest Savings Bank, includes four high school basketball games, all of which feature at least one Cape May County participant. The event will also include a dedication ceremony to mark the unveiling of a new basketball floor that will be used each year during the tournament in the Convention Center’s West Hall. This new basketball floor was made possible by a generous grant from the Byrne Foundation. All Battle at the Boards games will be played on the new basketball floor in the West Hall of the Convention Center.
The Battle at the Boards is scheduled to begin with a contest between two local rivals as Cape May Tech faces Lower Cape May Regional in a boys game at 1:30 p.m. At 3:45 p.m., Lower Cape May’s girls team will take on Timber Creek.
The first two games will be followed at 5 p.m. by the dedication ceremony for the new basketball floor. Members of the Byrne family, as well as other local dignitaries and tournament sponsors, are expected to be in attendance.
The ceremony will be followed by two of the biggest games of the entire Boardwalk Basketball Classic – the Andrew Alameno Memorial Boys and Girls Island Championship Games featuring cross-town rivals and tournament co-hosts, Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic High Schools. The girls game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with the boys slated for a 7:15 p.m. tip-off. Alameno was a native of Wildwood Crest and graduate of Wildwood Catholic High School who died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001.
The Wildwood/Wildwood Catholic boys game will be broadcast live on 98.7-FM WCZT radio.
Tickets for the event are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens, children and high school students. Tickets can be purchased at the door and are good for the entire day. Boardwalk Basketball Classic all-tournament passes will not be accepted for the Battle at the Boards on Dec. 23. The Boardwalk Basketball Classic continues Thursday, Dec. 26 through Monday, Dec. 30 at the Wildwoods Convention Center. Boys and girls from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia will compete in what has become the largest single-venue coed high school basketball tournament in the country.
The Boardwalk Basketball Classic is a non-profit high school basketball tournament whose purpose is to raise college scholarship money for graduating seniors at Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic high schools, the joint hosts of the Boardwalk Basketball Classic. The tournament’s committee is made up strictly of volunteers.
