OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Pops Orchestra, William Scheible, Artistic Director, presents his 25th Anniversary Concert on Sunday, July 24th at 8:00 p.m. at the POPS’ historic performance venue, The Music Pier, located at Moorlyn Terrace and the Boardwalk. Soprano Michelle Johnson, the 2011 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Winner, received her opera training certificate from Boston University Opera Institute and her bachelor of music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. She is currently a candidate for her artist diploma at Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts, where she has sung the title role of Suor Angelica, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, the Countess in Capriccio, and Alice Ford in Falstaff. She has also sung Monisha in Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha with Opera Providence, a Naked Virgin in Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron in concert with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro with Boston’s L’Orchestra da Camera. Upcoming is Aida with the 2012 Glimmeglass Music Festival and Leanora in Il Trovatore with Opera in the Heights.
Steven LaBrie, a native of Dallas, Texas, is currently a fourth year resident artist at The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, PA. During his residency, he has performed roles such as Marcello in La bohème, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Kuligan in Kát’a Kabanová, Baron Douphol in La Traviata, Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia, and the Captain in Eugene Onegin. He has performed with Opera New Jersey as Moralés in Carmen. Last summer, he made his debut with Glimmerglass Opera as Araspe in the United States premier of Handel’s Tolomeo followed by Miller in El gato con botas with Gotham Chamber Opera at the New Victory Theatre in New York. He also sang with the Dallas Opera in 2011 as Paris and Mercutio in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. Mr. LaBrie has made several appearances with the Ocean City Pops Orchestra including Billy Bigalow in the production of Carousel under the baton of Maestro Bill Scheible in 2009.
