WILDWOOD — Summer has finally arrived in the Wildwoods, and with it comes a full calendar of unique, fun-filled events, festivals and concerts for the entire family, in addition to award-winning, FREE beaches and a nationally-recognized boardwalk renowned for its amusements, dining and shopping.
Summertime events in the Wildwoods start on Fourth of July Weekend. In addition to a FREE fireworks/laser light show extravaganza at 10 p.m. on Sun., July 4, the entire holiday weekend includes a FREE Wildwood Crest Centennial Fourth of July Freedom Festival and Craft Show taking place Friday, July 2 through Sun,, July 4 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This not-to-be-missed event features quality crafters of all kinds, great food, FREE live entertainment and lots of childrens’ activities.
The Wildwoods Independence Day Parade and sixth Annual Patriotic Pooch Parade featuring dogs of all shapes and sizes will parade along the streets of the Wildwoods dressed in patriotic garb alongside decorated bicycles on Sun., July 4 at 9 a.m., and free concerts take place throughout Fourth of July Weekend including the B Street Band, 2U (U2 Tribute Band), Bandstand, Shirley Alston Reeves (former lead singer of the Shirelles), and Changes in Latitude (a Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band).
For collectors of any and everything, the Wildwoods Convention Center will host three annual collectibles expos throughout the summer. The Wildwoods’ two Sports Card, Comic Book, Toy and Collectibles Shows are scheduled to take place , July 2 through Sun., July 4 and , Aug. 27 through Sun., Aug. 29 and will each feature more than 100 tables of the hottest collectibles, including old and new sports cards; toys; comic books; Starting Line-up figures; McFarlane figures; NASCAR memorabilia; non-sports cards including Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic; Beanie Babies; unopened wax boxes; supplies; autographed memorabilia; sets; posters; coins; t-shirts; trains; dolls; and much more. The Convention Center will also host a Coin, Stamp, Postcard and Antiques Show featuring collectibles and antiques for the avid or beginner collector on , July 23 and Sat,, July 24.
Two brand new events in the Wildwoods this summer include the first-ever Maritime Festival at the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse on Sat., July 17,in North Wildwood, featuring historical displays from assorted maritime/lighthouse museums from around the country; crafters and vendors selling nautical theme merchandise; activities for children, Lighthouse and Garden tours, food vendors, musical guests and more.
The Wildwoods will also host a new Celtic celebration – the Irish Summer Fest – on , Aug. 13 and Sat., August 14. Taking place inside the Wildwoods Convention Center, the festival will feature Irish Musical Performances plus Irish Dance Workshops, Competition and Celtic Marketplace featuring Irish Crafts. The festival will also include a full production show of the internationally renowned Celtic Crossroads Band – straight from Ireland. They are to music what Riverdance is to dance. Tickets are $25, $35 or $45 for VIP seating and can be purchased by calling 609-849-6365.
Summer 2010 in the Wildwoods will also see the return of many classic Wildwoods events. On , July 9 through Sunday, July 11, the New Jersey State Barbeque Championship and Anglesea Blues Festival will take place along Olde New Jersey Avenue in North Wildwood. Featuring the best barbeque to be found at the Jersey shore, prepared by expert Barbeque teams from all over the country all vying for the State title, guests can indulge in mouth-watering ribs, chicken, brisket and pork while enjoying the soulful sounds of the region’s top blues musicians. Two weeks later, Santa will make his summertime return to the Wildwoods on Sat., July 24, during the Wildwoods Christmas in July Celebration.
The Annual Wildwoods Baby Parade, a tradition since 1909, will take place on Wednesday, August 4, and will once again feature some of the country’s cutest youngsters strolling the Wildwoods Boardwalk. Other Wildwoods classics returning for 2010 are the United Way of Cape May County Rubber Ducky Regatta Sunday, August 15; the William Penn Cat Club-Cat Show Sat., August 21 and Sunday, August 22; and the Wildwood Block Party and Festival Sat., August 28.
Beach sports are a big part of summertime fun in the Wildwoods and, in 2010, the Wildwoods beaches will host a variety of sporting events. Morey’s Piers’ Cape Express Beach Blast Soccer Tournament will attract even more barefoot soccer players to the Wildwoods’ beaches on Sat., July 17 and Sunday, July 18. Morey’s will also host its first ever Beach Lacrosse Tournament on Sat., July 17. One of the only beach lacrosse tournaments in the world, this new event is sure to become a Wildwoods beach classic. The Wildwoods’ beaches will also be the backdrop for Wildwoods’ Annual Co-Ed Beach Ultimate Frisbee Tournament Fri., July 25 and Sat., July 26. In addition, the Wildwoods will host other sporting events throughout July and August 2010, including swimming and lifeguard competitions; boogie board and Hobie Cat sailboat races; beach runs; fishing and grappling tournaments; and a live WWE professional wrestling show.
