STONE HARBOR – The U.S. Interior Department knew exactly what it was doing when, in October 1965, it named Cape May County’s finest nature preserve a National Historic Landmark. The Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary has come a long way since the first birds to arrive, herons, nested there in the late 1930s. In the years since it has become one of the nation’s premiere preserved bird habitats. The flora and fauna of the sanctuary provides shelter, food, and water for its delicate winged inhabitants who are visited every year by countless tourists and locals.
The natural pride of Stone Harbor, the Bird Sanctuary features a self-guided path that leads to marsh feeding grounds of heron and egrets, where one is likely to hear tropical songbirds; a view of the freshwater meadow that is home to ducks, songbirds, great blue herons, and night herons; salt water tributaries filled with fish; and beautiful natural forests that double as nesting grounds.
The Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary is located at 114th Street and Third Avenue in Stone Harbor and is open from sunset to dusk. Docent led tours happen every Saturday and Sunday at 10 AM.
