Spring Lecture Series: New Jersey in the Civil War

By Joan Nash

COURT HOUSE — One hundred fifty years ago, our country began the worst conflict in our history, the American Civil War. Join us at the Cape May County Museum as we explore the impact of the Civil War on the citizens of Cape May County and New Jersey, both those on the battlefront and those left at home.
April 27th – Jim Stephens, member of the New Jersey 150 Committee and Civil War reenactor, will present “New Jersey Odyssey, an Anthology of Civil War Tales,” the untold and long forgotten stories of New Jerseyans and how they coped with the Civil War. Jim, a contributing author to a book of the same name, will have publications available for signing and purchase.
May 4th – “Saints & Sinners,” the role of women in the Civil War. Some served as nurses, some as spies and some even dressed as men and fought alongside their fellow soldiers. Learn about this seldom discussed subject this evening.
May 11th – military historian Joe Bilby will present a program on New Jersey’s African American Civil War troops based on his book “Freedom to All, New Jersey’s African American Civil War Soldiers.” Joe is a noted author of many books on New Jersey’s military history and also serves on the New Jersey 150 Committee. Joe will have copies of his book available for purchase and signing as well.
May 18th – Local historian Bobbie Babbitt will recount the story of William Thompson, naval hero and Congressional Medal of Honor winner, who was born and raised in Cape May County and who was wounded at the Battle of Forts Bearuregard and Walker off Hilton Head Island.
