Shakespeare Gets A Visit From Father and Son Team

By Herald Staff

CAPE MAY — Cape May Stage, as part of their commitment to quality original theatre, is proud to announce another world premiere event: Come What May, written and performed by Joe Plummer, Sr. and Joe Plummer, Jr.,.
It is a dramatization of the life of the greatest dramatist of the English language, William Shakespeare. Part of Cape May Stage’s acclaimed Second Stage Series, Come What May will be performed June 28 at 8 p.m. at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse at the corner of Bank and Lafayette Streets.
Guaranteed to delight both lovers and haters of Shakespeare, Come What May tracks the life of the Bard from his birth to a glove maker in Stratford, through his decision to leave his wife and children, and his eventual career in London.
Says Joe, Jr., “Come What May is all about the man behind the myth. It’s a unique play that peers beneath the hype and the hyperbole, a play that reveals a man with dreams, passions and flaws just like the rest of us.”
In it, the Plummers play a variety of characters; however, the main relationship in the play mirrors their own: Joe, Jr. plays William and Joe, Sr. plays his father, John. Throughout the course of the play, it becomes apparent that father-son relationships have not changed much over the past four centuries.
Joe, Jr. is the Artistic Director of Poor Tom productions of New York City, the United States’ only all-male Shakespearean production company, and Joe, Sr. is a frequent performer. Presented in tandem with Cape May Stage’s mainstage production of I Hate Hamlet, Come What May is a truly moving experience: a father and son Shakespearean drama presented by a father and son.
Joe, Jr. says, “Come What May is an unflinching look at how Shakespeare’s relationship with his own father might have played out.
In the end, they were probably like fathers and sons today; complicated, loving and incredibly important to each other.
Tickets are $20. Call (609) 884-1341 for reservations and information or visit the theatre’s website, www.capemaystage.com .
