‘Second Sunday’ Gallery Walk November 14

By Herald Staff

CAPE MAY — The Cape May Artists Cooperative Gallery will participate in the “Second Sunday” Gallery Walk on Nov. 14.
The event is a partnership of the Artists Co-op, Gail Pierson Gallery, Splash, Soma Gallery, Spirit Catcher Gallery and Mad Batter Restaurant and runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Start your gallery walk at the Artists Co-op in the West End Garage, 484 West Perry Street, Cape May, where there is plenty of free parking, and spend your afternoon enjoying the beautiful and unique work each gallery offers. “Second Sunday” featured artists at the Artists Co-op are gourd artists Anne Lentz and Lori Sekella and photographer Scott Whittle.
Anne Lentz began working with gourds in 2003. A friend brought some home from a trip and Anne thought they would make an interesting medium. A Christmas present of a box unfinished, uncleaned gourds got her started. She is a self-taught gourd artist, frequently searching the Internet for information. Anne lives in Villas in a small cottage built in 1935.
Lori Sekella started in gourd art six years ago after a trip to Ashville and Cherokee, NC vintage gourds from Kenya.” Lori is also a self-taught gourd artist. She trained with a craftswoman in Cumberland County, NJ who taught her to weave with natural materials and fibers atop gourds. Lori’s gourd art has been in several juried craft shows in NJ. She and Anne founded Goshen Gourds four years ago.
Lori also creates art dolls. These are small, soft dolls, 18″ tall, created from fabric. She creates her own patterns for the dolls, which are hand and machine sewn. Each doll has its own story, based on her imaginary and real friends. Lori attended an art doll class at the John C. Campbell Folk in spring 2010 and Art Dolls from Gourdville came to being shortly afterwards.
Scott Whittle is a professional photographer and artist who has lived and worked in New York City for over fifteen years. Scott has an MFA in Photography from the School for Visual Arts (NYC); is a fellow of the MacDowell Art Colony; and has shown with Jen Beckman Fine Art (New York), EM Donahue Gallery (New York), Schneider Gallery (Chicago) and the Woodstock Center for Photography. He has recently relocated to Cape May, NJ, and is pursuing his twin passions of photography and birds.
The Artists’ Cooperative Gallery is a group of 28 local artists who have joined together to showcase and sell their work as well as educate the public about their art forms. November’s featured artists as well as other artists from the Cooperative will be on hand to meet the public and discuss their work. Light refreshments will be served.
Co-op manager Diane Cutshall is delighted that Second Sundays are now a citywide celebration of local art. “We began Second Sundays so the community could meet our artists and learn about their work. Now the opportunities for artists are so much greater with the wonderful gallery scene that has grown in Cape May.”
The Artists Cooperative Gallery is open Friday through Monday from 10am – 6 pm. Call 609-770-8261 for information.
