WILDWOOD – Morey’s Piers ArtBox resident artist, David Macomber, has been selected to show his 8-foot high wave sculpture, inspired after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan. ArtBox, Morey’s Piers’ interactive artists colony crafted from 11 re-purposed shipping containers, features artist galleries, interactive workshops, and local artists featuring their works of art throughout the summer.
“I am always searching for new entertainment ideas,” said Jack Morey, second-generation partner of Morey’s Piers and leader of the ArtBox visionary team. “ArtBox is quirky, nostalgic, cutting edge, and a true celebration of the visual and musical arts at the Jersey Shore…just the thing that belongs on the Wildwoods Boardwalk and I am eager to bring David and his local art to the international stage.”
The three-dimensional, wooden wave sculpture, named Itswell, has been on display at Morey’s Piers ArtBox for the last two summers and has garnered much attention from guests. The giant wave, located on Morey’s Adventure Pier, has become an icon of the ArtBox with hundreds of guests taking their picture in front of the sculpture; made from post Hurricane Sandy reclaimed wood.
“The wave was created as a symbol of the uprising of unity that I witnessed during that time of great tragedy. I wanted to build something massive to remind people of that time,” said David Macomber, local ArtBox artist. ArtPrize art festival runs from Sept. 24 through Oct.12 and it is one of the largest art exhibits in the nation. Over $500,000 in prize money is available to artists and the art exhibit will feature over 1,800 artists, representing 49 different countries, with over 170 venues.
To make the journey from Wildwood to Michigan the massive wave, consisting of hundreds of wooden pieces, will be dismantled, loaded in the back of a pick up truck and then trekked1600 miles round trip to Grand Rapids, MI. The wave will take two days to rebuild and will remain on display until mid October.
