CAPE MAY – Award winning artist Marie Natale will be displaying her watercolors at the Magnolia Room of the historic Chalfonte Hotel, August through October.
The opening reception will be hosted by the Chalfonte Sunday, August 7th, 2-3:30 p.m., serving wine, cheese, appetizers – and a special treat – cake celebrating the 135th birthday of the hotel. The theme of Natale’s show is Celebrate Cape May. Natale’s art is among several watercolorists featured in a new book, The Chalfonte. Author Karen Fox will be at the event, signing books. The book and Natale’s paintings are for sale.
Natale has been displaying her art at the Chalfonte for several years. She is known for “capturing the charm and every day life of southern New Jersey with her vibrant and exciting palette of color.” A resident of Egg Harbor Township, Natale is a popular teacher and demonstrator. She teaches plein air weekly in Cape May. A signature member of the New Jersey Water Color Society, Natale’s paintings can be found in private collections around the world.
In this show, there will watercolors of some of the historic characters and personalities in Karen Fox’s book – for example, Miss Diddy, the southern belle, famous for her yard sale treasures, which she hung in a gallery outside her hotel room. Marie has painted a retro poster of Miss Diddy, in her cotillion gown, with her garden hat in hand, the Chalfonte in the background. The hat – the original – will be displayed by her watercolor.
The Satterfield family of Richmond, Virginia, owned and operated the hotel for 70 years. The matriarch, Susie Satterfield purchased the hotel 100 years ago in 19ll. Natale honors the family in watercolor in her Satterfield Collection. Satterfield watercolors include Susie’s daughter “Tyee” portrayed in her Victorian dress on the beach; Nancy Satterfield Davey, in her pigtails and freckles, also in a beach retro poster as well paintings of some of the beloved, devoted African-American staff. Natale is showing more than 50 pieces – including always new watercolors of the Chalfonte’s many architectural faces and scenes around Cape May.
Author Karen Fox is a resident of Cape May and Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. She was an award-winning television news manager and producer and currently is a regular feature writer for Cape May Magazine.
The August 7th event is open to the public.
