WILDWOOD – POSTCARD WORLD Magazine, an international bimonthly publication “…for Today’s Deltiologist” (a person who collects and studies postcards) contains a feature story spotlighting the iconic picture postcards of the Wildwoods in the latest (November/December 2013) issue.
The article was written by Evelyn Mishkin, North Jersey (Succasunna in Morris County) resident and the Wildwoods aficionado. The author, along with her husband and three daughters, “discovered” the island resort in 2001. They have returned each summer, eschewing former haunts like Disney World for what middle daughter Shaina tags “real vacations in the Wildwoods.”
To begin her research, Mishkin attended the George F. Boyer/Wildwood Historical Society Museum’s annual Postcard Vendors Show in June. She returned during the summer, spending many hours reviewing the museum’s extensive postcard collection and learning about local history.
The result is a lively and informative narrative complete with a thumbnail history of the island beginning at the turn of the 20th century. It describes the evolution from an idyllic place that real estate brochures advertised as “having trees, parks and lakes” to one of the most exciting and electrifying entertainment and boardwalk amusement centers on the planet.
The story’s most interesting revelation was mined from an article in the April 30, 2013 online edition of the Cape May County Herald. Mishkin elaborated on a topic that came to her attention serendipitously via a Google alert she had set for “Wildwood Postcards.”
Postcards in the Wildwoods are being reinvented by postcard photographic artist and producer Douglas Hunsberger. “Designer Series Postcards” he produced in the 1980s now have a new life as spectacular 36-by-24 inch enlargements that greet visitors who check into the Reges Resort Motel and visit Hankins Fudge. The images on display are “teasers”, provided as incentives to businesses that purchase sponsorships, leading up to the “Giant Postcard Exhibition” slated for Wildwood’s Doo Wop Experience Museum. The exhibit will be placed on display when fundraising is complete.
The world’s first exhibit of its kind will feature images made from remastered drum scans of the original film (photographic transparencies) used to print the cards. Giant Postcards and Little Giant Postcards are unforgettable additions to décor packages for motel lobbies, restaurants and retail establishments. They also become unique conversation pieces as home decor. Proceeds from sales are used to fund Giant Postcard remasters for the exhibit.
Deltiologists and fans of the Wildwoods can now acquire “postcards as big as their Wildwood memories,” thanks to this recent article in POSTCARD WORLD.
