Playwright Mark St. Germain Visits Cape May Stage

CAPE MAY – Playwright Mark St. Germain, author of Freud’s Last Session, will be paying Cape May Stage a special visit Sept. 21 and Sept. 22. In two very special talk-backs after the 8 p.m. performances, St. Germain will illuminate audiences to the inspiration for the show and the process of tackling the radically different positions of the two main characters. Audiences will get the opportunity to pose questions and engage in discourse with St. Germain, accompanied by light refreshments in the intimate setting of the Robert Shackleton Playhouse.
“Having an artist like Mark St. Germain talk to our patrons gives new insights into the creation of Freud’s Last Session – we are so privileged to have him in person,” says Cape May Stage’s Producing Artistic Director Roy Steinberg.
Mark St. Germain has written a number of other works, including most recently Dr. Ruth, All the Way (2012), and Scott and Hem in the Garden of Allah, premiering in August of this year. Both works focus on fictional encounters between historical figures in a similar way to Freud’s Last Session. For its depiction of a fictional encounter of Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis, Freud’s Last Session won the Best Play Award from the Off Broadway Alliance in 2011.
Freud’s Last Session stars Cape May Stage veterans Joel Rooks and Mark Irish and runs from Sept. 18 to Oct. 19 at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse located at the corner of Bank and Lafayette Streets in downtown Cape May. Performances are at 8 p.m. and occur Tuesdays through Sundays with a special $25 Anniversary matinee at 3 p.m. on Oct. 19.
An additional talk back with the cast and crew of Freud’s Last Session will take place on Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. before that evening’s performance. Complimentary refreshments will be served as the idea of ‘contradictions’ is addressed – between the irreconcilabilities and commonalities of faith and science, reality and fantasy – and the role these contradictions play in the show.
