OCEAN CITY — Joe Mohan will perform a piano concert 7 p.m. Mon., July 19 at the Ocean City Tabernacle Church, 550 Wesley Ave.
Only 17 years old, Mohan is already an accomplished piano soloist. He has performed piano concertos with the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the South Carolina Philharmonic, and the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra.
His solo recitals include a Sept. 11 memorial concert, a guest performance at the Thousand Islands International Chopin Piano Competition for Young People, a special concert entitled “Music and a Message” for the Niagara Lutheran Health Foundation, and a pre-concert performance for the Amherst Symphony Orchestra.
He also has been accompanist for five musicals.
Volunteer work has included nursing home visitations/outreach to the elderly, fundraisers for Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Kids Escaping Drugs, serving meals at St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy, work at the Clarence Public Library, and playing at local churches and the Farmer’s Market.
Mohan has won numerous piano competitions as well as achieving two Awards of Excellence from Clarence High School and the Eastman Community Music School Director’s Award. He was one of six students featured on the PBS Documentary, Piano Forte.
In April 2010 he won the “BPO Idol with Marvin Hamlisch” in Buffalo, New York. He performed his arrangement of patriotic songs in a five-night show entitled “Salute to America” with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in June 2010.
In addition to his piano studies, Mohan plans to continue his interest in arranging, composing, and conducting. He has been a piano student of Ms. Alla Kuznetsov at the Eastman Community Music School. He will study classical piano at The Juilliard School in the fall with Seymour Lipkin.
