Philadelphia Brass Coming to Cape May

CAPE MAY — Access to Art’s Sam Maitin Music Festival will open with the Philadelphia Brass, legendary brass musicians, celebrated at home and abroad. The event will be held on Sat., June 29 at the Cape May United Methodist Church, 625 Washington St., at 7:30 p.m. near Victorian Towers and City Hall. It is easier to describe where they have not played, as to describe where they have. Martin Goldsmith, NPR’s Performance Today said “One of the gems of Philadelphia’s cultural life.” Tickets are $20. Adults, $15. Seniors and students. Call (609) 465-3963 to register. Tickets will be on sale at the door an hour before the 7:30 performance on the day of the event.
Philadelphia Brass’s members have delighted people from the Royal Albert Hall, London, to the heights of the Bolivian Andes. Said composer, Daniel Pinkham, “The stars of the show were the members of the Philadelphia Brass. This group has to be the most artistic brass quintet before the public today and they are the most style-conscious brass ensemble I have yet worked with.”
As individual musicians, they have performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia, Boston and New Jersey Symphonies, the New Jersey and Philadelphia Opera Companies, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Bach Festival, and they will bring their celebrated talents here to Cape May. The musicians have tutored at Juilliard, Harvard and Yale, performed at the Vermont Mozart Festival and recorded with major opera stars. Access to Art, Inc. is celebrating its15th year presenting world class music.
The Philadelphia Brass members have been principal players in the Philadelphia Opera Company, performed in the Walnut St. Theatre pit orchestra, and in the great swing bands like Les Elgart, and Jimmy Dorsey, and as individual musicians on Broadway in Ragtime and Beauty and the Beast. They performed in the Metropolitan Opera, made appearances at the Bach Music Festival, and performed in the Chamber Music series at Lincoln Center, collaborated with opera stars like Pavarotti and Denyce Graves, as well as the likes of Bob Hope, Tony Randall and Barry Manilow,
On June 29th, the Philadelphia Brass, known for its virtuosity, will perform for Access to Art’s 15th Sam Maitin Chamber Music Festival bringing its verve, vivacity and love of brass music to the area. Anthony Cecere, French Horn, Robert Gale, trombone, Brian Kuszyk and Lawrence Wright, Trumpets, and Scott Mendoker, Tuba make up the Philadelphia Brass.
They will perform classical works and works from their American Songbook. They have been heard on the Bavarian Radio, and in specials on PBS. Philadelphia brass members performed in the swing bands of Glenn Miller, Les Bogart, Jimmy Dorsey. Robert Gale, performed for Johnny Mathis, Donna Summer, Vic Damone, the Temptations, Manhattan Transfer, Natalie Cole and numerous others. And usually they are the principal trumpet, French horn, Tuba, Trombone of whatever artistic endeavor they are engaged in.
They record with major recording artists, and are involved in Emmy Award winning documentaries and their CDs win accolades from Fanfare Magazine who calls them “resplendent.” Composers vye to write music for them.
