OCEAN CITY — People will be dramatically dropping all over the Ninth Street Beach on Fri., Sept. 3 starting at 11a.m. They will be participants in the resort’s annual Fall Guy and Fall Gal Contest held to welcome the new season.
Contestants will be asked to fall theatrically (and in slow motion) to the sands. The man and woman performing the most original renditions will be crowned the “King and Queen of Plop.”
After the winners are named, all contestants will hold hands and plop in mass in a display of goodwill. Registration starts 10:30 a.m. on the Ninth Street Beach adjacent to Music Pier. Entry is free and prizes will be awarded. All participants receive a Plopping Certificate to document that they were in the unique event and to impress the folks back home.
Suzanne Muldowney, AKA Underdog, will offer an interpretive dance then drop to her knees during a drama packed finale. Elvis performer, Ted Prior, will sing the Western Swing hit, “The Tumblin Tumbleweeds” and “I Can’t Helping Falling In The Sand For You.”
The World’s Only Wind Chimes Band of Ocean City, New Jersey will provide soothing background tinkling for the ploppers.
Soprano, Nancy Fox, will deliver a stirring aria then collapse on the beach. Pirates from Doug Jewel’s Air Circus will engage in a sword fight then fall to the sand as they pretend to dispatch each other.
The city’s environmental mascot, Trash Buster, the Canned Crusader, will sing his theme song “Stand By Your Can!” before sinking to the ground. Gymnast, Julia Albertson, will perform an exciting routine finishing with an intricate plop.
Potential entrants should not be intimidated by the preceding list of ploppers. Most of them are special performers and will not be judged.
A panel of celebrity judges will select the winners. They include Hank Glaser, proprietor of Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy and Fred and Susan Miller, authors of best selling Ocean City history and postcard books. The Millers have promised to put the fall contest in their next book to document it as an important event in the annals of Ocean City.
The rules of the contest are simple. All participants must fall dramatically in slow motion to the sand. Costumes are permissible, even encouraged. All contestants must sign a waiver to free the City from liability. Parents must sign for under age ploppers.
“This is our way of emphasizing that fall is on its way and that it’s a great time in Ocean City,’ said Publicist, Mark Soifer. “The weather is grand and we have many events planned right up to First Night and First Day at the Beach, our gala, New Year’s celebrations.”
