Nuns’ Beach Surf Match Set on Sept. 11

By Press Release

STONE HARBOR — The Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary will host the 15th Annual Nun’s Beach Surf Invitational on Sat., Sept. 11 at the 111th Street beach.
All proceeds benefit the maintenance of Villa Maria by the Sea, its 150 bedroom beachfront retreat.
The alliance between the Sisters and the surfers was established more than 60 years ago when local surfers approached the retreat and asked if they could ride the waves at 111th St.
The Sisters obliged, and the rest is history.
In 1996, with lots of support from the property’s manager Sister James Dolores, local surfers Bill Deger and Larry Gehrke spearheaded the idea of a surf contest to help fund the retreat’s upkeep.
The event has gotten so popular that the number of participants has been limited to 100, but hundreds of spectators will be on hand to enjoy the festivities.
Proceeds from the event will help finance general maintenance of the building.
T-shirts, hats, and beach towels can be purchased at Pete Smith’s Surf Shop on 96th Street and at the convent at 111th Street.
Contact Deger for information at 609-368-2188.
