OCEAN CITY — A colorfully illustrated children’s book, “The Birth of Mr. Taffy,” is now available from Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy, Ninth and Boardwalk.
It is the work of Meryl Vangelov, a member of the Shriver’s family, who created the mascot 10 years ago.
Mr. Taffy is a tall, replica of saltwater taffy complete with large eyes, a bow tie and a winning smile. “Children like to hug him and have photos taken with him and now they can read how he came to be,” says Vangelov, an art school graduate who both wrote and illustrated the book.
Vangelov and her husband Blue recently purchased the business from her mother Ginny Berwick and uncle, Hank Glaser, who will remain as consultants. The business has been in the family for 112 years. The Mangelovs hope their children will take over some day.
The birth of Mr. Taffy may be purchased at Shriver’s for $14.95 or on line at www.shriver’s. com.
