COURT HOUSE — The Performing Arts Center of Middle Township will pay tribute to one of the most popular singing groups of the early rock and roll era when it hosts Larry Marshak’s Tribute to The Platters on Sat. night, Oct. 19, at 7:30.
Formed at the beginning of the 1950s by five teenagers, the Platters went on to record 21 top-ten records, 9 million record selling singles, five platinum albums and five number one songs. They are among the top 25 selling artists of all time. Their songs include long lasting hits “The Great Pretender,” “My Prayer,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “Only You” and “Harbor Lights.”
Although the last original member of the Platters left years ago, the group continues to travel the world as a big box office attraction. Marshak’s connection with them began 15 years ago at Las Vegas’ Sahara Hotel where they headlined for several years. “The greatest care has been taken to assure that each new group member pays homage to the tradition and skills associated with the original group,” said Marshak. More than 20 of the best known American standards will be performed in the concert.
As a bonus that night, The PAC will offer as an opening act “Mister Excitement”, and New York nightclub entertainer Ron Gartner who will perform a salute to the music of the 50s and 60s with songs from the Bandstand and Motown genres.
Tickets are $25 and may be reserved by calling 609-463-1924. The Performing Arts Center, soon to mark its 21st anniversary, is situated at 212 Bayberry Drive, Middle Township, one mile east of exit 10 of the Garden State Parkway. There is free parking on the premises.
