OCEAN CITY — Martin Z. Mollusk, Ocean City’s intrepid, weather predicting Hermit Crab, will attempt to see his shadow for the 43rd time on the Moorlyn Terrace Beach, south side of Music Pier in Ocean City May 7 at 11 a.m. If he sees his shadow, summer comes a week early to Ocean City and the merchants and populace rejoice!
Martin’s spouse, the former Mollie Shellfish of Tepid Swamp Louisiana, will accompany him carrying his packet of medications. Martin is 101 in Hermit Crab years. Both Martin and Mollie are graduates of Tepid Tech University with degrees in Weather Prognostication.
It’s all documented in Martin’s Official Biography, “Rhyme and Punishment.” A copy will be available for inspection on May 7.
“Big Momma Llama” of Bready Farms in Tuckahoe will shake her head if Martin sees his shadow when he enters the Circle of Truth. The Circle of Truth is a sizeable circle in the sand. Martin creeps into it and attempts to see his shadow.
Pre-schoolers who attend will receive miniature, shell replicas of Hermit Crabs similar to Martin. Official Doo Dah Parade T-Shirts will be given to spectators courtesy of Dietz and Watson.
Ceremony starts 11 a.m. with a Parade to the Beach as the Ocean City High School Band Plays Pomp and Circumstance. Celebs in the procession include Martin and Mollie; Dr. Frankenstein and Nurse Perfect, who check Martin’s vital signs prior to the creep; Shelley, the Mermaid, AKA Suzanne Muldowney, who will sing “Some Enchanted Morning” to psyche Martin; The World’s Only Wind Chimes Band, that will entertain spectators with their chart buster, “Brother Can You Spare a Chime?”; Doug Jewell the Pirate who is in charge of Security; The Ocean City Fish and emcee Mark Soifer, Chairman of the Board of NASCRAB, the National Association of Crab Activities at the Beach. This organization sanctions the event. Plus Miss Ocean City, Kendall Coughlin, Junior Miss, Meghan Keenan and Little Miss, Hope Aita.
