Mardi Gras in September Coming to Cape May

By Herald Staff

CAPE MAY — For a number of years it has been hard to find any good Dixieland Jazz in south Jersey. It seemed that all the clubs, concerts and festivals provided other types of jazz. This presented a real problem for all the true Dixieland Jazz lovers who want to be able to hear and see their favorite kind of music in a live setting.
This problem was solved in 2008 when Ray Petit, Bob Ashman and Charlie Logeman formed the “Cape May Traditional Jazz Society”. The purpose of the non-profit CMTJS is to develop, educate, promote and enjoy Traditional Jazz (Dixieland, Blues, Ragtime & New Orleans Style) in south Jersey. Their goal is to keep this unique original American Art form of great music alive and affordably available on a regular basis.
CMTJS vision is to: have Sunday afternoon gigs monthly with professional jazz musicians playing Traditional Dixieland Jazz in a local venue; develop local youth musicians by forming partnerships with local high school and college music departments and our local Traditional Jazz musicians to help their youth learn, love and have an opportunity to play this type of jazz; publish a quarterly Newsletter with pertinent Traditional Jazz information; build a strong membership and group of volunteer workers.
