MAC Releases Nov. 2011 Calendar of Events

By Press Release

CAPE MAY – Cape May’s Nov. 2011 Calendar.
Through Nov. 6:
“Remembering South Cape May” Exhibit: Robert Kenselaar, author of “Remembering South Cape May: The Jersey Shore Town That Vanished Into the Sea,” is the guest curator of this new exhibit that examines the rise and fall of the community that once stood west of Cape May’s beachfront on land that today is the Nature Conservancy’s Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge. In its heyday, the town of South Cape May had more than 40 homes and hundreds of summer residents. The town was washed away by mid-century to create the current Cove. One of the town’s last residents, Joseph Bucher, has chronicled life in South Cape May before the Atlantic swallowed this serene town in this new book, co-authored with his son-in-law, Robert Kenselaar.
This exhibit is open daily through Nov. 6; hours vary. Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Admission is free.
This exhibit was made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations in this exhibition do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities or the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. This exhibit is presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). For more information or to make reservations, call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278 or visit www.capemaymac.org.
Through Nov. 19:
Cape May Stage presents “Red”: Master American expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his assistant, Ken, in his studio in the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his demise. Raw and provocative, Red is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting. Winner of the 2010 Tony Award for ‘Best Play’, “Red” is a moving and compelling account of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century whose struggle to accept his growing riches and praise became his ultimate undoing.
Performances run through Nov. 19, Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m., at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, corner of Bank & Lafayette streets. Admission: $35 Adults, $30 Seniors (62+), $15 Students. Sponsored by Cape May Stage in association with the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). For more information, call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278 or visit www.capemaymac.org.
