Carriage House Gallery Exhibit: “Cape May Ablaze” From the pages of “The First Resort.” Author Ben Miller brings alive 150 years of dramatic fires that have shaped Cape May’s history. Cape May Stage presents “The Mountaintop”: Set in 1968 on the eve of Martin Luther King’s assassination, this powerful drama by Katori Hall weaves a surrealistic fantasy about a conversation between King and the mysterious hotel maid who brings him coffee and prompts him to confront his life, his past, his legacy, and the future of African-Americans. Cape May Stage – Film Screening of “The March”: On August 28, 1963, over a quarter million people joined together in what was to become the biggest civil protest in American history. Receiving unprecedented media attention, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom represents a divisive moment for the Civil Rights movement – the day Martin Luther King delivered his now iconic “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Cape May Stage Second Stage Series — Liz McKendry in “From Buffalo to Broadway”: Last seen at Cape May Stage as Gretchen in the smash hit Boeing Boeing, Liz McKendry returns with “From Buffalo to Broadway,” a spirited tale of a young girl’s mission to realize her dream. An enchantingly versatile performer, McKendry will take audiences on a journey through the euphoria, disarray and survival of this lifelong quest. Boasting a wide range of credits, McKendry has appeared in the Broadway musical The Producers, in addition to a number of roles off Broadway, in regional theatre and television. Cape May Stage – A Staged Reading of “Streetlight Woodpecker”: Streetlight Woodpecker follows the story of Benji, an undersized Marine who has returned to his Irish-Catholic neighborhood in Philadelphia after being critically injured during battle. He bears not only the medals he earned but also the scars, and now that he has come home he must face the emotional wounds he avoided by going to war. June 10 at 8 p.m. Admission: Pay what you wish. East Lynne Theater Company presents “The First Fifty Years”: This comedy/drama charts the ups and downs of a married couple in seven scenes from 1872, seven years after the end of the Civil War, to their golden anniversary at the beginning of the Roaring ‘20s, in 1922. East Lynne Theater Company’s artistic director tracked down the only known script of this forgotten gem at the Billy Rose Collection at Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts in NYC. Wednesdays through Saturdays, June 11-July 19 at 8:30 p.m. (no show on July 4; additional show on July 6). Lighthouse Full Moon Climb: The Friends of the Cape May Lighthouse invite you to the full moon climb. Take advantage of the light of the full moon and let it guide you up the 199 stairs to the starry top. The Lighthouse is located in Cape May Point State Park, Lower Township. Tower admission is free for “Friends” members. June 13, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Non-members price is $8 for adults, $3 for children (ages 3-12). Delaware Bay Lighthouse Adventure: Come aboard the Cape May Whale Watcher to view and photograph historic lighthouses of the late 19th and early part of the 20th centuries. Most of these lighthouses stand on pedestals out of sight of land and are still operational. Each 7-hour cruise includes narration on Delaware Bay lore and legend, with information on fishing, spawning grounds and more. Includes complimentary continental breakfast in the morning and a lavish buffet lunch. A cash bar is available. June 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets $99. Cape May Stage presents “Moon Over Buffalo”: In the madcap comedy tradition of Lend Me a Tenor, Ken Ludwig’s hilarious Moon Over Buffalo is a zany, slapstick, backstage antics-driven farce as actors’ George and Charlotte Hay realize their big chance to move from Buffalo theater to Hollywood movies. Cape May Stage Second Stage Series — “Celebrating Pride”: On May 31, 2013, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation declaring June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride month. In this, he states: “Support for LGBT equality is growing, led by a generation which understands that, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’” Cape May Stage is proud to show its support for this movement by celebrating LGBT Pride month through a special play reading that celebrates the diversity of the American people and embraces sexuality in all its conceptions. Ghosts of the Lighthouse Trolley Tour: A trolley tour through parts of West Cape May to the Lighthouse, with tales of ghostly activity throughout. Participants will be met at the Lighthouse by a costumed Keeper who will relate a ghostly tale inside the Lighthouse with time available to climb. Begins and ends at the Ocean Street trolley stop. The Cherry House has been the subject of numerous paranormal experiences. Cape May Stage Second Stage Series — “Ivy League of Comedy Night starring Jon Fisch and Shaun Eli”: Called one of America’s smartest comics, Shaun Eli’s material has appeared in the opening monologues of a number of late-night personalities, including Jay Leno, who has called Eli’s comedy the kind of “smart comedy” he likes to use. A graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Eli’s style of humor has been described as “smart and wry and a little cerebral” by The Scarsdale Inquirer. A master storyteller, Eli exposes the hilarity that can be found in the ordinary when life is approached with the right attitude. June 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets $25. Behind the Walls & Under the Crawls Trolley Tour: Finally! A tour for those who want to know, “How’d they DO that?” Cape May has one of the largest concentrations of 19th century wood frame structures (over 600) in the United States. World War II Tower Lookout Museum and Memorial: (Fire Control Tower No. 23) A Museum and Memorial. Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. After the award-winning restoration, visitors can climb to the sixth floor spotting gallery while reliving the homeland defense efforts during World War II.
