MAC Offers Free Lecture Series

CAPE MAY –Cape May’s architecture, the Physick’s family history, the Civil War, the newly restored World War II Lookout Tower, the Cape May Lighthouse and Alice Steer Wilson will be discussed at lectures presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). MAC is opening select staff training programs to the public for free. Get access to in-depth, richly illustrated lectures, presented by area historians including MAC’s Education Coordinator, MAC’s Curator, MAC’s Director and a local philanthropist during programs presented from April 12 through April 27.
The following programs are open to the public:
• Learn about one of Cape May’s most famous families, the Physick’s, at a program presented by MAC Curator Elan Zingman-Leith on Tuesday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Ave.
• Italianate style, Gothic Revival style, gingerbread trim, board-and batten siding and much more will be covered in the Cape May Architecture lecture presented by MAC Director Michael Zuckerman on Thursday, April 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Ave.
• New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II Lookout Tower, the Fire Control Tower No. 23, and its history will be the topic of the lecture presented by MAC Museum Education Coordinator Dr. Robert E. Heinly on Wednesday, April 20 at 4:30 p.m. at the Carriage House located on the grounds of the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St.
• The 1859 Cape May Lighthouse, one of the oldest continually operating lighthouses in the nation, will be the topic of the program presented by MAC Museum Educator Rich Chiemingo on Wednesday, April 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Carriage House located on the grounds of the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St.
• Noted philanthropist Sue Priester presents “To Cape May, Love Alice: The Life and Times of Alice Steer Wilson” on Monday, April 25 at 6 p.m. at Cape Island Baptist Church, 115 Gurney St This richly illustrated program focuses on the life and work of Alice Steer Wilson, one of Cape May’s premier artists, and her relationship to the Cape May Renaissance of the 1970s and ’80s. Some parallels with other artists and other places are discovered along the way.
• Immerse yourself in the “Victorian Civil War,” and learn about blue versus gray during the program presented by MAC Museum Education Coordinator Dr. Robert E. Heinly on Wednesday, April 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Star of the Sea Church, Washington Street Mall at Ocean St.
