Cape May Stage presents “A Walk In the Woods”: Lee Blessing’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated drama, filled with unexpected humor and extraordinary humanity, is an absorbing, revealing, and brilliant debate on the eternal hope and relentless futility of high-stakes politics. Two superpower arms negotiators— one a witty but cynical Russian veteran and the other an idealistic American newcomer — meet informally in the woods after long frustrating hours at the bargaining table. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays, 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. The Robert Shackleton Playhouse is located at the corner of Bank & Lafayette streets. Carriage House Gallery Exhibit: “Cape May’s Chalfonte Hotel: A Living National Landmark”
Built by Civil War hero Henry Sawyer, taken prisoner 150 years ago (1863), the Chalfonte Hotel has hosted guests continuously for over 137 years. Home to heroes, heroines, heartaches, legends, love affairs, unforgettable characters and nationally famous cooks, the hotel’s intriguing history comes alive in this exhibit guest-curated by Karen Fox at the Carriage House Gallery at the Physick Estate. Sherlock Holmes Weekend: New mystery for 2013! Join Sherlock Holmes and his partner, Dr. Watson for a weekend of mystery and intrigue, Friday through Sunday, Nov. 1-3. Get into the spirit of things by donning Victorian attire. Stalk the gaslit streets in search of clues and compete for the $250 grand prize and a variety of other valuable gifts as you attempt to solve the mystery. Full weekend packages are available at $180 per couple or $95 per person and include the welcome reception, performances, tour, luncheon and gift. Weekend overnight packages are also available. East Lynne Theater Company presents “Holmes and Carter Mysteries”: Performed in the style of radio shows from the 1930s through the 1950s, is this vintage-radio style production, complete with live sound effects and commercials, featuring two great detectives — Sherlock Holmes Adventure of the Copper Beeches about a governess in peril, and Nick Carter and the Strange Dr. Devolo, in which Manhattan millionaires are missing. While Sherlock Holmes was solving crimes in England, Nick Carter, originally known as “Nicholas” Carter, was busy in Manhattan. Carter first appeared in “The Old Detective’s Pupil” published in Street and Smith’s “New York Weekly” in 1886 – a year before Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes’ first caper, “A Study in Scarlet.” In October, 1930, the Sherlock Holmes radio series began with The Adventure of the Copper Beeches and in April, 1943, the Nick Carter series was launched with The Strange Dr. Devolo. Mansions by the Sea Trolley Tour: This tour features a century of beachfront development, from Victorian cottages of the 1870s through the most up-to-date of today’s housing. Enjoy a wide variety of holiday tours and food and wine events to get you into the Christmas spirit. Visit the Estate on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. as Santa arrives to flip the switch for the festive Tree-Lighting Ceremony (sponsored by Sturdy Savings Bank). The Cape Harmonaires will be on hand to lead a Christmas carol sing-along. That evening the Estate will be open for free, self-guided tours. Evening Yuletide Tour: New in 2013! Revel in the sparkly lights of Cape May’s beautiful Victorian homes decorated for Christmas on this Holiday Lights Trolley Ride followed by a guided tour of the first floor rooms of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, authentically decorated for a Victorian Christmas. Afterwards, visit the Carriage House for holiday refreshments and a visit to “An Old-Fashioned Christmas” exhibit. Tour begins and ends at the Ocean Street trolley stop. World War II Lookout Tower (Fire Control Tower No. 23) Museum and Memorial: Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. After the award-winning restoration, visitors can climb to the 6th floor spotting gallery while reliving the homeland defense efforts during World War II.
