Lower Art Students Participate in Exhibit

By Press Release

CAPE MAY – Lower Cape May Regional High School’s advanced art students will be participating in their fifth annual art show at the Mad Batter Restaurant, 19 Jackson St., Cape May, during the month of January. A reception for the artists will be held Jan. 13 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the restaurant. The work being displayed was created by juniors and seniors in the advanced art classes.
Their teacher Mrs. Patricia Neville explained, “Students studied the technique of the Dutch Masters and applied it to their own paintings. The goal is to create an illusion of dimension on a two dimensional surface by developing the ability to shade and blend in paint. Most of the student artists are working in acrylic paints but a handful decided to try oils for the first time.”
Students chose a still life to work from and applied a tinted ground after stretching their canvas. After drawing the design in charcoal on the canvas students used glazes of paint to build up the lights and darks. Students worked with either a monochromatic color scheme or limited their palette to focus on the values of the composition.
This annual exhibit gives the students the opportunity to have their work displayed at a professional venue. Pam Huber and Mark Kulkowitz, owners of the Mad Batter, have generously given the students the use of the entire restaurant to hang their work.
